One of the Balkan countries that are definitely worth a visit, both for the sea and for its hinterland. Montenegro can be visited at many times of the year, we recommend you to see 3 things, low cost.
Located between the Adriatic Sea and the mountains, a a few hours by ferry from Italy, this small Balkan state, independent since 2006, is presented as a territory still little known, but full of potential. Whether you are looking for a seaside destination, a place rich in history and culture or simply an unusual destination, the Montenegro it could be the place for you. Close and easily accessible, beautiful and definitely low cost, here are 3 reasons why you shouldn't miss this state:
The landscape
The first reason is, of course, its beauty. Divided between rugged mountains and flat coasts, Montenegro presents itself as a territory with a truly particular and evocative landscape, in which the cold tones of the montagne they blend with the bright reds of the roofs and the blue of the sea. With its sunny cities, clear waters and somewhat wild beaches this destination will give you truly unique images. Don't miss the Bay of Cattaro, particular marine inlets sheltered from the open sea and surrounded by high mountains, which due to their shape have often been compared to the Norwegian fjords.
The sea
The second reason Montenegro is worth a visit, especially in summer, is its enchanting sea, which has nothing to envy to that of nearby and more touristic Croatia. Although its coasts have a rather small extension, this state offers its tourists a variety of beaches able to satisfy all tastes. To the border with Albania for example you will find the vast beach of Velika Plaza, the largest in the whole nation, while a Budva you can discover one of the most popular coasts of the Adriatic. If, on the other hand, you love tranquility and are looking for a wilder stretch of coast, you will certainly appreciate the area between Kotor and Herceg Novi, near the Bay of Kotor, where the presence of gulfs and inlets will give you the impression of immersing yourself in a large private swimming pool.
The cities
Finally, one last reason to visit Montengro are its cities, among which the splendid Cattaro, Kotor for the locals, a UNESCO heritage site since 1979. Located in front of the sea and surrounded by a mighty wall, this town offers its visitors truly picturesque views. Inside the walls you can stroll through the beautiful squares and find several noteworthy buildings, including the theater, the clock tower, the Cathedral of San Trifone and the maritime museum. But the real spectacle of this location is offered by the clash between the tall buildings and the barren Montenegrin mountain, which will seem to loom over you every time you look up.
The nearby city of is also delightful Herceg Novi, where you can visit the historic center and admire the numerous fortresses erected by the various rulers of the city. Characteristic of this locality is also the presence of numerous exotic plants, brought here by sailors returning to their homeland. Much more modern, however, is the capital Podgorica, located on the banks of six rivers, where I recommend seeing the archaeological site of Duklja and the Cathedral of the Resurrection.
