What to eat in Slovenia, what dishes and foods to look for during a low cost holiday in Slovenia. Here are five dishes tasted and recommended according to Slovenian tradition for a like a local holiday.
Slovenian cuisine is simple and authentic. This can be understood by stopping to eat in the ancient trattorias, many of which are family-run.
They are called gostilna in Slovenian and are magical places, still capable of giving those who stop there the beauty and goodness of a dish made with typical local products. Without unnecessary frills and perhaps served directly by the owner of the restaurant or by one of his children.
Here you will hardly find those tiny plates of "nouvelle cuisine" that when you get up from the table you are still hungry. The portions are generous and the flavors and aromas are more reminiscent of a Sunday at grandma's house than a trip to a restaurant.
A famous Slovenian saying says that "love goes through the stomach". And it is really true, because you fall in love with these places as well as with typical Slovenian cuisine. Are you curious about what to eat in Slovenia and what they are characteristic Slovenian foods? Here is a selection of 5 foods to taste absolutely during your trip to Slovenia.
Frika
A potato and cheese omelette, soft inside and crunchy outside. Very fragrant and delicious, it is served as an appetizer or main course. Frika is a “poor” and simple dish, prepared with few ingredients: eggs, potatoes and cheese, often that of Bovec. It was in fact once the typical dish of shepherds. As evidence that many times the least elaborate things are the best!

Bled cream cake
An irresistible temptation, typical of the area around the beautiful Lake Bled. Imagine a huge “Kinder Paradiso”, but much fresher and softer. No expense or calories were spared in the Bled cream cake.
A thick layer of whipped cream and the soft sponge cake like cotton wool. Definitely not a diet dessert, but indulging in some gluttony is good for your health every now and then!
Porcini mushroom soup
Soups are one of the pillars of typical Slovenian cuisine. A substantial and nutritious first course, sometimes used as a single dish, which almost all restaurants and trattorias serve in different variations. There is pumpkin soup, one with meat, one with vegetables or potatoes.
Porcini mushroom soup is definitely one of the foods to taste in Slovenia. Fragrant and delicious, made thick and velvety with mushrooms, it is one of the best ways to warm the Slovenian winter.
Struklji
A Slovenian who has to explain to an Italian what struklji are would probably define them as a mixture of a tortello and a strudel. The consistency initially resembles that of Chinese ravioli a bit. Struklji are one of the typical Slovenian dishes that can be prepared both sweet and savory.
The external dough is made with flour, eggs, milk, yeast and lard but there are still different varieties. The filling can be made of cottage cheese, meat, potatoes or fruit such as figs and pears, nuts, apple mousse and poppy seeds. Struklji can therefore be eaten both during the meal and as a dessert.
Bovec cheese
Bovec cheese has very ancient origins and it was produced as early as 1300, in the Bovec area, in the North West of Slovenia. Today it is one of the most popular in Slovenia and beyond. It is made with sheep's milk mixed with cow and goat milk. A genuine product made in the Alps, where there is no shortage of pastures and dairy animals.
To try the original Bovec cheese, go and buy it directly from the farm. It is definitely one of those foods to taste in Slovenia. And don't forget to wash it all down with the delicious typical Slovenian wines such as Refosco or Malvazjia.
