5 street food not to be missed in Turkey

I'll tell you a secret: I got it six kilos in six months to (literally) fully enjoy Turkish culture!

Six kilos of experimentation, new tastes, delicacies, Arabian sweets, spicy meats, flours, soups and doughs of all kinds. Six kilos of great satisfaction!

Il street food it is what I love most to experience in my wanderings, not just because low cost, but also because it is one of the purest and most realistic expressions of the culture of a people, right from its historical and anthropological roots.
So, are you ready for the top ten foods not to be missed on your trip to Turkey? In this article I will reveal the top 5 positions!

1 Balik Ekmek, or fish sandwich: my favorite is eaten in the port of Kadikoy, on the Asian side of the city. It is one of the most typical street foods, a unique satisfaction to eat it in the evening, returning from a busy day, getting off the steamer: a stop at the kiosk in front of the airport, and with a few lire you will find an XL size sandwich in your hands, steaming hot, filled with grilled sardines, salads, onions and sauces to taste. There is nothing better.

2 Baklava: pastries of succulent layers of puff pastry and pistachios soaked in sugar syrup. They appear in the windows of all the traditional pastry shops and in the sweets stalls of the neighborhood markets, together with bars of caramelized dried fruit… you can't resist.

3 Dolma: I recommend them rigorously prepared by an expert housewife, as it is a tradition handed down from generation to generation. They are rolls of vine leaves, rolled with the skill of an origami around a filling of rice, pine nuts, raisins and various spices. If this happens to you, also be taught how to prepare them.

4 Gozleme: an ancient dish, which can also be found in the most traditional and remote villages, prepared on a large round plate, with a truly simple and perfect flavor. A dough similar to that of omelettes, but much larger, and filled with minced meat or cheese. A jump into the past.

5 Kepap: the very famous meat cooked on a rotisserie becomes a real national flag and is now exported in many sauces. You will be amazed by the variety of preparation and presentation that you can choose, starting with the meat: lamb, beef or chicken. Among my favorites: Adana, suitable for lovers of strong emotions, rich in chilli; Iskender, characterized by the dressing of a sauce based on yogurt, tomato and melted butter; and finally the wonderful Durum, for those who prefer piadina to the classic sandwich.
