Ai Weiwei in Seville and the history of the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo

It is one of my favorite places in Seville. The Cartuja monastery, across the river, offers a unique spectacle: reeds and ponds play with each other with the reflections of the sun in a place far from the masses of tourists. Yes, because if you have a few days available, you will rarely go this far but I'm sure that art lovers will not fail to include this place with an ancient history that speaks a language of today in their itinerary.

An old monastery that stands on a sacred place where the legend tells us of a mysterious find, an icon of the Virgin Mary hidden during the period of Arab domination. In the 400th century a church dedicated to Santa Maria delle Cave was erected and in the 1810th century the Archbishop of Seville began the works for the construction of the convent which ended only later thanks to the funds allocated by the AlcalĂ  family. The Certosa did not have an easy life, in fact in 1839 it saw the invasion of the Napoleonic troops who transformed it into their headquarters until it became in XNUMX a ceramic factory even equipped with an oven. Now the Cartuja complex has been restored, restoring vigor and splendor to the essential elements of its monastic past.

Among the rooms of the ancient monastery there is the CAAC, Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo and among sound installations, paintings and sculptures it is possible to explore Andalusian inspiration and creativity, from the 50s to the present day. Interesting and extravagant exhibitions and exhibitions are organized at regular intervals with the aim of exploring and deepening the complexity of the national and international artistic panorama. In this regard, the Resistencia y Tradición exhibition, which brings the Chinese artist, will arrive from 1 February until 23 June Ai Weiwei in Seville.

The Cartuja Monastery and the CAAC are open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11.00 h to 21.00 and on Sundays from 11.00 h to 15.00 h, the ticket price is 3,00 € for the complete visit e 1,80 € for visiting the museum and temporary exhibitions. Entry is Saturday free, while Tuesday and Friday entry is free from 19.00 h to 21.00 h.
