Surfing in Cantabria, but also sailing. Some advice on which school to choose and where to go to take some surfing and sailing lessons in northern Spain.
I've already talked about the Cantabria in other posts but I waited a long time to tell you about the best part of this whole trip. Traveling means visiting, spending many hours in museums, tasting new dishes but also discovering new things about yourself. In Cantabria, for example, I discovered that I was denied for surfing but that I deeply love sailing and the thousand emotions that this sport gives you and I came to the conclusion that Cantabria is a place to love.
Surfing in Catambria
Having never practiced this sport despite being a great lover of the sea, I discovered shortly before my departure for this blogtour that Santander is a sort of Jerusalem for table enthusiasts: lovers from all over Europe spend the summer challenging the waves of the ocean. . The blog tour was held between the end of May and the beginning of June and I can assure you that the beach was already populated by many (and beautiful) surfers. One of the things that struck me immediately was to notice theimmensity of these beaches with a very fine composition: kilometers and kilometers of beach where you can run around peacefully without running into the neighbor's towel or the lady's deckchair opposite.
My surfer baptism, if you can put it that way, happened in Somo, a town not far from the more famous Santander: to reach it it will only take half an hour by car. As soon as we got out of the car we were catapulted into the world of surfers: Damian the school instructor The Surf Curve he welcomed us with his sun-branded smile and immediately put us to work giving us our corresponding tables to bring. As soon as we went down to the beach and with the instructions for use just fresh of explanations, Damian immediately made us enter the water with our board in tow. Unfortunately I was unable to surf, but I had a lot of fun trying to become a skilled surfer: one more reason to return to Cantabria as soon as possible.
Sailing in Santander
Sailing is a sport that always gives me a great sense of freedom and that is why I never miss the opportunity to get on it: what better place than in Santander, which in September will host the world sailing championships? Santander was chosen for this event precisely because, thanks to its morphological characteristics, it has been able to develop a strong sailing tradition: an enchanting bay where the tides mix and recur relentlessly. At the heart of this is the Isla de la Torre where the Cantabria Sailing Club was built.
I had the opportunity to visit this structure and I envied the students who had to attend it: structured like a house on several floors, the Club it can accommodate about 40 people with dormitories even with 8 beds, an immense dining room overlooking the sea but above all a large workshop where you can find everything you need to become excellent sailors.
For the blog tour I had the opportunity to try the basic course, although the school offers courses of different lengths and for real experts or for sailing enthusiasts: the result was that it is really difficult to manage a boat, despite being on a very simple structure but that gives a great sense of freedom and carefree.
And this is also a good reason to love Cantabria.
