Fuerteventura mini guide: the island of the wind

Fuerteventura, is the Canary Island closest to the African coast, with an area of 1.660 km. It is an arid and sparsely populated island, just think that the first hotel was built in 1965, followed by the construction of the airport. The sea is crystal clear, the vegetation is very particular and the desert areas color the small towns with orange. All this combined with the wonderful beaches and its natural parks make it the most beautiful island of the entire archipelago.

The particular climatic conditions present all year round have made its beaches a paradise for all those who practice water sports such as surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding. Very famous is the islet of Lobos and the beach of Sotavento where the World Windsurfing Championship takes place. 25 Surf Spot Centers receive fans of the genre from all over the world.
The seabed is also a strong attraction for all diving enthusiasts.

Among the most popular resorts and beaches in all of Fuerteventura, I can't help but mention some really special ones:

    • El Cotillo, a tourist resort in the north of the island with light sand with a very long beach dedicated to surfers and romantics for unforgettable sunsets.
    • le Corralejo dunes, a place north of the island with dunes of very soft desert white sand, a decidedly suggestive sight within the natural park of Corralejo.
    • Leeward, perhaps one of the most particular beaches, characterized by the alternation of the tides that cover and uncover hectares of beach, forming lagoons where you can walk in 40 cm of water. Many areas of this beach, which stretches for 5km, are not visited, therefore ideal for those who practice nudism.
    • Windward, a 10km long isolated beach from civilization. Reachable after covering about 15km of dirt road, it is a truly unspoiled and wild place, often frequented by nudists as the surrounding area is not urbanized.
    • Garcey, one of the dark beaches of the island, in which bay there is the wreck of a ship.
    • Morro Jable, is a natural and protected area.
    • Jandia, main tourist resort, with a beach that for its length is considered one of the best in the world.
    • Isla de los Lobos, a small island located between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, reachable in a few minutes by ferry, with truly suggestive natural landscapes.
    • Costa Calma, as the name implies, it is a place characterized by calm waters and golden beaches, it extends for over 2km and has areas equipped with sun beds and umbrellas. It is one of the best known locations also due to its proximity to the city center. Costa Calma is located south of Fuerteventura.

The tourist offer is very varied and suitable for every need from the classic farmhouse to the tourist village to the hotels located on the beach and equipped with all comforts. The nightlife is concentrated in the main tourist resorts where there are numerous clubs, discos, restaurants and pubs.

The island's climate is spring all year round, the hottest month is August, and the humidity is very low compared to Italy.

And here I am in the food and wine aspect, as in all the cuisine of the Canary archipelago the main dishes are based on meat and fish accompanied by potatoes and cheeses. Fish is served fried or grilled, while meat cooked in casserole. A typical dish is the Roncho Canario which takes its cue from the culinary tradition of Gran Canaria, consists in cooking the meat together with potatoes, onion, garlic, saffron and aromatic herbs. All covered with noodles, these in turn are covered with an omelette made with part of the ingredients used to cook the meat, but with the addition of sausage.

Very important is also the wine production, both red and white.
