Menorca, beaches and tips for the family

What to do in Menorca even with children, a low cost family holiday to discover the most beautiful beaches of the lighthouses and the most suggestive towns of this Balearic island.

Minorca is a perfect island where you can find crystal clear water, rich vegetation, suggestive viewpoints and landscapes that change drastically from north to south and which, in 1993, was declared by UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Renowned destination for nature lovers, it is often snubbed compared to the others Balearic islands especially by those who travel with children or those in search of nightlife, this guarantees quality tourism, aware and peaceful.

I was in Menorca at the end of August with my daughter (who was not yet 2 years old at the time) and it was a fantastic find that I recommend without a doubt.

I stayed at theOrange Carema Club Playa in the north of the island near Cala Tirant (nice, but nothing compared to the other beaches on the island, so don't be lazy and never stop on a single beach). An economical solution, compared to do-it-yourself, which included the return flight and the accommodation in the apartment with full board.

Major protagonists of Menorca are, of course, the beaches. Never the same and never predictable.

In the south are the most popular beaches appreciated by most tourists: crystal clear sea set in bays (more or less large) characterized by dense Mediterranean flora. Not to be missed are Cala Mitjana e Cala Mitjaneta, Cala Macarella e Cala Macarelleta (the latter is small and can be reached via a path in the woods).

More practical and wider they are Cala Galdana e Cala Turqueta, well equipped and ideal for a more tiring day with offspring in tow.
In my opinion, the most beautiful part is still that of the north: lunar landscapes, red sand that contrasts with a blue and often rough sea. Here you have to walk, always, but the effort will be rewarded by unique scenarios.

Cala Pregonda e Cala Pilar there are two splendid testimonies. Along the way you will have to follow paths immersed in a more arid nature than in the south, open gates (one of the symbols of the island) and be intrigued by the towers made with flat stones that are found in the area.

In addition to the beaches I recommend a tour to discover the island lighthouses, perhaps at sunset. Cap de Cavalleria (to the north) is nothing short of majestic, Cap de Favaritx (to the east) suggestive, the long road that must be taken to reach it is a fairy tale.

Among the villages to visit I point out Binica Vell (very nice because all white, but too touristy); Fornells (suitable for an evening stroll along the elegant promenade); Mao where there is the authentic “Mercado de Pescados”, a charming old town with interesting cafes in the square; Ciutadella but I advise you not to visit on Sunday because, even in high season, you will find everything closed.

Practical advice: even if you go to the beach, always bring a pair of sneakers to tackle the paths; buy an umbrella as there are few equipped beaches; rent a car rather than a moped because the distances are quite wide; if you travel with small children it is mandatory to carry the baby backpack on your shoulder; don't be lazy!
