Waterfalls, glaciers, lakes, unique and wild landscapes. Get ready for an intense tour to discover Iceland: a land that seems to belong to another planet.
Four days in Iceland, what to see in this land of unique landscapes, sometimes so wild that they seem to belong to another planet.
I had never thought of a trip to Iceland until I started to notice the social network boards full of The curiosity to see these mammoth waterfalls live, the black earth and the green meadows, the blue-hued glaciers, the blue lagoon and the colorful houses of Reykjavík has become irresistible.
However, I had a few days available and so I had to be content with making a short one four days tour of Iceland. I admit that there are few because there is so much to see, but in my opinion they still help to breathe the atmosphere of the country and to get a taste of some of the Icelandic natural wonders.
Four-day itinerary in Iceland
First of all, if you are short on time I recommend you rent a car, in order to be more autonomous. And to choose the summer period when the days are longer.
Once you land in Reykjavík, you can collect your car directly at the airport.
I have focused on southern area of the island, from the west to the southeast end of the country. Sure, I drove a lot, but having been there in June, when the sun hardly ever sets, I took advantage of the long days to have more time available.
Day 1. The Golden Circle and the falls
The first stop on my Iceland tour was the Golden circle. I visited the Pingvellir Park, where the fracture of the crust that separates America from Europe can be observed. The second stop, about 1 hour by car, was the famous geysers including the most famous Geysir.
I then stopped to see the Gulfoss waterfall and from there I continued towards the south of Iceland in the direction of the town of Vik.
On the road, you find, practically in the middle of nowhere, the wreck of the DC-3 plane, forced into an emergency landing in 1973 and then remained there until today. The walk is quite long (2 hours round trip) but the view is exciting.
Another very suggestive waterfall to see is that of Gluggafoss.
Day 2. Vik and the Dyrholaey headland
The second day I went to see the Skogafoss waterfall. Climbing the almost 500 steps, you reach its top and can be admired from above.
Continuing west you reach Vik, with its large black beach, but before arriving there I recommend that you also make a stop at promontory of Dyrholaey.
If you still have the strength to drive, pushing east will reach the spectacular Jokulsarlòn glacial lake with its blue and blue icebergs.
Day 3. The colors of Reykjavík
On the third day, returning to the capital Reykjavík, I stopped to see the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, very special because you can practically walk behind it.
I stopped there one night in Reykjavík, although some find it not a particularly interesting stop. For my part, I found it a very colorful, lively city where I gladly spent half a day, also to rest a little after the many hours of driving.
Day 4. Gardur and the Blue Lagoon
Before returning to the airport make a stop at Gardur lighthouse, which is located a short distance from the latter.
And finally, an unmissable stop, will be the famous one Blue Lagoon, whose waters have an incredible fluorescent blue color. If you have time, stop for a few hours to swim before taking your return flight. However, it is better to book in advance from the site, also to be able to take advantage of a more advantageous entrance price.
The Blue Lagoon is approx 20 minutes from Reykjavík Airport.
