How to get to Tibet, on the Roof of the World

Il Tibet unfortunately does not offer the opportunity to do a direct flight, but only with a stop in Kathmandu in Nepal or Chengdu in China. Among the options, Qatar Airways offers 2 weekly flights Rome / Milan-Beijing, then you can go on to Chengdu and from Chengdu to Lasha with a China Air flight. The flight hours are at least 15, not counting the stopovers. The total distance traveled is approximately 11.000 km. Passing through Kathmandù, in Nepal you need to calculate at least 11 hours, taking into account that the Kathmandù-Lhasa flight takes 40 minutes. Alternatively, you can go from Beijing to Chengdu in train: the trip takes about 16 hours and you save a lot.

At the time of purchasing the air ticket, it is necessary to have the visa for China. Overall, the Rome-Lhasa flight costs around € 1300 a / r.

Also you can reach Lhasa from Kathmandu walking along the Road of Friendship (by bus or taxi in 2-3 days), if you try thehitch-hiking know that you risk heavy fines and expulsion. On 1 July 2006, the highest railway line in the world was inaugurated, connecting Lhasa to Xining. You travel 960 km above 4000 m, with a maximum peak at 5072 m; the wagons are pressurized (like airplanes) to avoid altitude sickness, and on each train there is a doctor and a nurse to treat any emergencies.
