New York and Hurricane Sandy, the story of an Italian

New York also known as the city that never sleeps it had to stop due to force majeure. All of you will have followed the story of theHurricane Sandy. They have brought you news a bit in bulk.

I tell you my experience with the first (and hopefully last) hurricane. On Sunday I was walking around Manhattan as usual and in fact I met up with some friends from the same city as me. The wind was starting to rise but no one cared more than they should ... Until we learn that theJFK airport it had closed.

At that point I take my friends and take them to my house with the last ride of the subway of that day. We get ready to do the shopping but not even great things just pasta, sauces, various crap, milk. "Shall we also take water?" my friend asks me and I answer promptly "no the one from the tap is very good". Hours later I understand that there was a possibility that they would also turn off the water! We spend the first evening at home between horror movie and read early. Monday seemed like a very normal windy day and I knew to myself that I had seen much worse. I almost laugh at the thought that they had exaggerated the alarmism. Silly you!
Yet the wind is gradually getting stronger.

I go out one last time on the terrace to remove the table with the chairs that drops water from each side and I think it is good to start making a video until I'm almost taken away. I finally understand that the situation is getting worse. The glasses at a certain hour have started to vibrate I thought they all exploded from the strong pressure.

Every now and then I updated everyone that I was fine with the hope of not losing the connection. The critical moment did not last very long at least in my area and already around one in the morning the situation was improving, but I can say that I have had better nights. The day after the damage count! In my Brooklyn area we were really very lucky, I never even lacked light or electricity and apart from the roof cover everything was in place.

But turning around in the surrounding areas there is no shortage of closed roads where trees have fallen on less fortunate cars or homes. To see Manhattan still flooded or places where the situation is really bad like in NJ or know of friends a Long Island e Staten Island without water, heating, light for 4 days it really makes me realize how lucky I was!

What is most striking now that the worst is over? The strength of each person to start over, the will to start again stronger than before without wasting time to cry off, it strikes the help that each person gives to his neighbor and to any stranger who comes near him. Come on America we are with you!
