Il Las Lajas Sanctuary is a place of worship and pilgrimage located in the canyon formed by the Guaitara River in Colombia. It is located in the municipality of Ipiales, department of Nariño, in the south of the country. The sanctuary is dedicated to Virgin of the Rosary, whose image was painted by an unknown author on a stone slab, near a path in the river canyon. This image moved the Christian community so much that the place was transformed into a sanctuary.
The current building (the fourth from the XNUMXth century) is a church of Neo-Gothic style and was built during the first decades of the twentieth century to replace a chapel dating back to the nineteenth century.
The story goes that the image was discovered by a 'native called María Mueces, with her little girl, when they headed home and who, taken by surprise by a storm, sought refuge at the edge of the path, among the cavities formed by the flat and wide stones that characterize that area of the river canyon. To her mother's surprise, the little girl who until then had been considered deaf and dumb spoke and pointed to the painting.
A trip to Colombia cannot fail to see this Sanctuary as a stage for his own striking beauty.
