Sri Lanka is an incredible land, to be discovered slowly and in movement, experimenting with many sports, even extreme ones. Wonderful views and tasty dishes await you to savor.
Lo Sri Lanka it is a real gem to be discovered and treated with great care. An island surrounded by the turquoise waters ofIndian Ocean, with a hinterland rich in vegetation and hidden treasures. A place to visit slowly and to be enjoyed comfortably seated in a "hotel". Get ready, let's find out through three experiences not to be missed.
1. Journey into taste
The journey is known to pass through food. Sri Lanka is a tropical country and that means fresh and tasty fruit. Mango, papaya, coconut and pineapple are the masters at any time of day.
Are you a lover of first courses? Don't miss an excellent dish of Kottu, in a typical "hotel" together with locals. It is a typical dish made of fried bread cut into small pieces and seasoned with vegetables, meat or fish. If you don't like spicy, remember to warn them. Also try the typical dish par excellence: the Curry & Rice. As the name suggests, it is rice to be seasoned with various bowls of vegetables, meat or fish. All to be enjoyed with a good cold beer or a coconut juice.
2. Travel on the go
If you love water sports you are in the right place. Arm yourself with fins and goggles and immerse yourself in the crystal clear waters to do some ' snorkeling. If you are lucky you can spot the magnificent green turtles and even some sharks. Obviously, do it responsibly and perhaps accompanied so as to be quite certain to spot animals and not to harm you. Another experience that deserves to be lived in the open sea is thewhale watching. To do this, rely on one of the many agencies that organize outings in the early hours of dawn. And enjoy the spectacle that only nature can offer.
Are you more of an extreme sport type? Then try surfing. Rent a board and try to ride the waves of the Indian Ocean. The South Coast is a great place to learn and get some lessons. I assure you that until you manage to stand on that board at least once they will not let you out of the water. If, on the other hand, you are more experienced, take a board, even for hire, and jump into the waves.
Did you say trekking? Also in this case you can be satisfied. Yes, it's not really about trekking, more about walking. Lose yourself in the labyrinths created by tea plantations, or discover the hidden city built on the famous Sigiriya "Climbing" its twin: Pidurangala Rock. From here you will have an incredible view of the surrounding jungle and you can enjoy the sunrise.
3. I travel slowly
As I told you Sri Lanka is a Country to visit slowly. With two weeks of time you can visit it very well, but I recommend that you be careful if you want to travel by public transport. They don't really have fixed times, but very approximate and they are also very slow. Seeing is believing. And the train route not to be missed is certainly the one that connects the city of Kandy with the village of Ella. You know the Thomas train? Here, when I saw him I immediately thought of him. Few wagons, a lot of people and that snort that announced his arrival. It was just like being in a cartoon.
The journey is long, but very long. Something like 8 hours to do maybe 150 km. But I assure you that it is really worth it. Grab a second class ticket and somehow try to take a seat in the aisle near the door. Yes, you got it right, right next to the door that will remain open all the way. You can become children again and enjoy a slow journey with your legs dangling. Admiring the tea farms and breathing the journey just like an island resident.
