Zagreb is divided into upper and lower cities, connected by a funicular.
If you only have a weekend in Zagreb, you can start from the upper town area, which is the oldest part of Zagreb. You will clearly notice the difference in architecture between one and the other.

Here are the famous Zagreb Cathedral and the very special St. Mark's Church.
Its structure in colored tiles makes it look a lot like a Lego construction and on the roof are reproduced the medieval coats of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia.
Of the central Ban Jelacic square, you will notice instead the mix between art nouveau buildings and the austere Hungarian style.
Not far from the square is the famous Dolac, the city's agricultural market, open every day (except holidays) until 15pm.
Here you can buy wooden handicrafts: kitchen accessories, toys and other typical products of the area.

The lower town of Zagreb
Instead, dedicate the second day of your weekend in Zagreb to visiting the lower city.
Start from the very long via Ilica, the largest in the city. Full of shops, restaurants and pubs, it is a great starting point to discover this part of Zagreb.

The lower city is also full of museums, such as the Mimara Museum and Strossmayer Gallery of the Old Masters.
