Il Berlin Wall it was built on 13 August 1961 and its fall began in the autumn of 1989, officially on 9 November of the same year. Today there is very little left of the Wall, about a kilometer and a half which has been renamed East Side Gallery.
The East Side Gallery is located in the neighborhood Ostbahnhof and it is a must see even if you only stay in the city for a few days. The wall here is very well preserved and is visited by all artists who come to Berlin and want to contribute to the artistic realization of the wall. The remaining piece of the Berlin Wall is painted and drawn by all who want to leave a mark.
Another place not to be missed for a trip to Berlin and to visit the places unfortunately made famous by this tragic event is to pay a visit to the Checkpoint Charlie. This checkpoint was the transit point between the two Germanies, the East and the West between 1961 and 1989. Today the checkpoint has been rebuilt and visible to all, a soldier remains to be present in front of this historic point.
Inside theHaus am Checkpoint Charlie Museum also the famous “You are leaving the American sector” sign, written in Russian, French and German.
