Brussels is a capital 'sui generis', but today also thanks to nearby Flanders and the numerous low cost flights it is becoming more and more appreciated and visited. If you too have decided to spend a few days in the multicultural European capital, here are 5 things you just can't miss!
Admire the Grand Place
Recognized as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the Grand Place of Brussels, also known as Grote Markt, in Dutch, is without a doubt one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.
A large open space surrounded by magnificent buildings, headquarters of the old guilds and dating back to the XNUMXth century. Above all, theHotel de Ville of Brussels, seat of the town hall, dating back to the early 1400s.
The square is the soul of the city and throughout the year it hosts unique events such as the Tapis de Fleurs (Flower Carpet), while during the Christmas period, every day from 17pm onwards, it comes alive with colors, sounds and lights in an absolutely unmissable show.
Visit the Atomium
The Atomium is located on the outskirts of the city and is easily accessible by metro. It is a unique architectural structure, emblem of Belgium and of the Universal Exhibition of 1958; built entirely of steel, it is 102 meters high, and is made up of nine spheres that represent the 9 atoms of an iron crystal.
Visiting it is like experiencing a journey within a journey: passing through metal pipes, permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibitions, you reach the last sphere, from which you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city.
Take a "thematic" tour of the city
There are many thematic tours offered by the Tourist Office to discover the capital of Belgium. From the path of comics to that ofArt Noveau, from the one dedicated to Victor Hugo to that of surrealism, everyone has the opportunity to walk among the monuments and beauties of the city following their passions, be they artistic, natural or historical. Comics highly recommended, of which Belgium is the undisputed homeland!
Visit the Magritte Museum
After having toured the city to discover the 35 murals dedicated to the great Belgian cartoonists, it's time to take a leap into surrealist art, thanks to the splendid Magritte Museum. More than 200 works by the great surrealist painter are housed in one of the buildings of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, a few steps from the Royal Palace, Notre Dame du Sablon and Mont des Arts from which you can admire the entire Old Town.
Taste beer, chocolate and chips
Among the 5 things to do in Brussels certainly could not miss the food and wine aspect. In fact, you will not be able to leave the capital before having tasted its specialties!
Belgium boasts over 500 beer labels: this drink is a real institution in the city and in every corner you can stop to drink a typical simple Lambic or in the Kriek version, to which, during fermentation, cherries are added.
Also not to be missed chocolate, to which an entire museum is dedicated! And the fries that are served here with special sauces, all to try. If you want to eat like a real Belgian, order them together with mussels: it may seem a risky combination but it is the official dish of the city: Moules et frites for everyone!
