La Hofbräuhaus is the oldest and most famous brewery in Monaco. Born as a court brewery, it is currently owned by the Bavarian State. His name literally translates to National Court Brewery in Munich, to recall its royal origins. Yes, because the Hofbrauhaus is not just a brewery. It sells the beers it produces itself, nationally and world-famous beers. Excellent, among the best German ever. And the varieties, well… I've lost count.
Malt, double malt, light, dark, there is something for all tastes and for all sizes. The local, located at number 9 of Platzl, in the historic center, is immense. Three floors normally welcome about three thousand people but, in the period ofOktoberfest over ten thousand people pass and stop. In the room on the ground floor, very characteristic, there are numerous kiosks where you can buy mugs, glasses and gadgets of all kinds related to the world of beer. Characteristic of this room are the long solid wood tables, the waiters in Bavarian costume and the orchestrants, also dressed in the typical Bavarian vests and shorts, who play local music.
The atmosphere is jovial but relaxed and it's possible accompany the beer to various courses. Highly recommended they are pork knuckle (godurioso) served with the inevitable potatoes and bretzel, the most popular bread in Germany, dark on the outside, very soft and aromatic on the inside, covered with coarse salt crystals. The gem of this room is one bulletin board crammed with mugs fixed to it with a padlock: they belong to regular customers which, in addition to the private mug, also enjoy special discounts. The menus are in various languages, including Italian, and it is also possible to take some with you as a souvenir. The very competitive prices and the high quality of the products served show that the State, when it wants, knows how to make its economy fly.
The dining room on the first floor is a little more elegant and refined, while the second floor is reserved for buffet dinners with a fixed menu.
The Hofbrauhaus is not only famous for its beer. It is also defined as the "Hitler's Brewery”Since, back in 1921, it was here that the fuhrer held that famous speech which sanctioned his questionable political success.
The brewery is open from 9 to 24 and I assure you that at any time it is full of customers ready to drain liters and liters of the precious blonde drink. Reaching it is very simple, practically all subway lines reach it, just get off at the “Marienplatz” stop.
It is not compulsory to order, you can enter the HB just to look, buy gadgets or listen to good music walking undisturbed around the place. HB beer can also be found in bottles, in supermarkets both in Germany and in other parts of the world, but drink it there on the spot, perhaps in one of the typical 1 liter mugs, it's a whole other story. Apart from the emotional aspect, the taste and alcohol content, however, are objectively different. But this shouldn't surprise us too much; we are all aware of the huge difference between draft and bottled beer, aren't we?
