Travel to the largest island of the Ionian, in the post all the tips to find excellent accommodation and more than tasty food.
I already told you about Kefalonia, the largest island of the Ionian and much loved destination.
Not being a small island, it can happen that you find yourself a bit off the beaten path and do not know where it is best to stay.
I was there for two weeks and, in order to get around it well, I decided to stay in two different places: Sami e Argostoli.
Sami
Sami is located along the east coast of Kefalonia and its small port offers many connections to the island of Ithaca and Patras.
I really liked this small village because it is very quiet and in the evening it is pleasant to walk along the seafront, where there are plenty of bars and restaurants.
The area near Sami offers beautiful views and many natural beauties, in fact, not far away, you can visit the caves of Melissani, Drogarati and the small Karavomilos Lake.
Above the modern part of the village, the ancient ruins of Sami, with the site of the Agrillion monastery; a must see.
Not too far from the country is one of the most popular beaches in Kefalonia, la Antisamos beach, also famous because the film “Captain Corelli's Mandolin” was shot here.
In Sami, I stayed from Remezzo Apartments and I really enjoyed it, excellent value for money.
Argostoli
Argostoli is the capital of the island, very crowded and with a very lively nightlife: there is no shortage of clubs, restaurants and shops of all kinds where you can buy anything.
Argostoli overlooks the Koutavos lagoon, where, especially in summer, there is a coming and going of yachts and fishermen who sell fish to the island's locals.
The city is the hub of life on the island, which is divided between the port area and streets of the center; there is no shortage of museums such as the Archaeological Museum and the famous Museum of history and folklore, Duomo, Theodoron Lighthouse and Cyclopean walls.
As I have already explained to you, it is a very lively town and, especially in August, getting around by car becomes very complicated.
I stayed atArgostoli hotels and, even here, I was fine. The breakfast is all home made by the owner who is very nice and has a small outdoor garden where you can relax.
As for me, however, I would advise against choosing Argostoli during the summer: too much chaos.
Kefalonia, what to eat
Kefalonia is not just things to see and beaches, it's also good food!
One of the things you have to taste is it Greek yogurt with honey; you should know that honey is one of the main delights on the island as bees are raised directly there.
You absolutely cannot miss this delight and, if you fall in love, you can buy the honey from one of the many local vendors and lo yogurt even at the supermarket, where you can find the one produced directly on the island… it's really great!
Another delicious dessert is the Loukoumades: fried dough balls seasoned with honey or chocolate. Too good.
As a savory specialty, i cannot miss Gyros and the Pita, classic dishes of Greek cuisine, you can find them in many places cooked very well and at ridiculous prices.
In Kefalonia there are many festivals, especially in summer, and there you can enjoy dishes like it Goat stew he pork skewers (souvlaki), cooked in a divine way.
Other delicious things are theirs savory pancakes, especially those of zucchini, accompanied by a good sauce tzatziki or the traditional Greek cheese, the feta, made in the oven.
Last but not least is the fish: on the island you will find lots of fresh fish, I really liked i squid, in particular those grilled, the grilled and fried fresh fish... really good.
