Fairytale castles, lush green countryside and villages that smell of the Middle Ages: the Romantische Strasse is a route not to be missed!
La Romantische Strasse, magical area of the Germany, it's a route of about 360 km between green countryside and magical villages full of places that smell of the Middle Ages. Why not season it all with a bit of adventure by walking it in camper? Said and done, let's go.
1. The Neuschwanstein Castle
I had the pleasure of living this experience at the beginning of November and my advice is to organize yourself with winter clothing, as the climate of those areas is not very mild.
The initial and fundamental stage of this path is the Neuschwanstein Castle, built by Ludwig II e identified as a symbol of Disney. At the foot of the castle there is a convenient paid parking where you can leave your vehicle and continue on foot, by mini-bus otherwise on horseback. The route is not steep, perhaps a little long, but can be easily traveled at any age.
The guided tour of the castle costs 13 € and the ticket can only be purchased at the ticket office at the foot of the castle. This visit will catapult you into rooms furnished as at the time of construction in 1886, with high quality materials.
Continuing the Romantische Strasse, you pass through villages characterized by houses with pointed roofs and pastel shades, very large green countryside and farms. These characteristics are suitable for a relaxing and emotional journey, especially in the evening, where the lights of the hill towns illuminate the atmosphere.
2. Schongau: medieval town
Not to be missed is Schongau: a medieval town surrounded by walls. Your position, along the banks of the Lech River, characterizes it with fountains and streams. The city maintains a remarkable historicity and the tour along the walls highlights various eras, alternating houses from the Gothic era to houses from the Bavarian Rococo era.
3. The suggestive Nördlingen
If you are fond of stories about natural disasters you cannot miss the visit to the town of Nördlingen, built on the crater of a meteorite that fell millions of years ago. It is the only German city to have totally intact walls with beautiful niches and decorative workings.
4. The famous Munich
On the way back it is possible to make a small detour on the route to make a stop in the gem of Bavaria, Munich. At the gates of the city center is located Campingplatz Munchen Thalkirchen: convenient to leave the camper and walk to the main places of the city, have an excellent drink beer at the Hofbrauhaus, a very famous historic brewery.
Along the Romantische Strasse, as in most of Germany, it is very easy to find caravan parks equipped with unloading points and columns where, with a few euros, it is possible to recharge both electricity and water. The roads are wide, avoiding having to carry out awkward and complex maneuvers.
The concept of carrying around the snail-style house of the camper allows you to carry out low cost travel.
Last advice: in Germany it is a good idea to properly check whether there is a significant difference between internal and external table service, it often happens to find unexpectedly high accounts because no attention has been paid to this detail. If you also appreciate enjoying quick meals on the go, you should definitely try it pretzels and dried meat, a very common combination of the Bavarian areas.
