Kings Canyon Resort: a hotel halfway between Uluru (Ayers Rock) and the town of Alice Spring, the ideal place from which to start hiking in Watarrka National Park. A splendid place to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere and nature.
A way to explore all or at least a beautiful part ofAustralian outback, is to take a rental car and drive the road that goes from Ayers Rock to Alice Spring. My journey has been exactly that. Once I landed at the tiny airport near the Yulara Resort where I was staying, and after traveling about 500km, with an overnight stop at Kings Canyon Resort and some excursions, I arrived at Alice Spring from where I flew back to Sydney.
The path is very interesting, sometimes incredible: you will often find yourself alone in the middle of nowhere on a straight orange road with nothing around it, if not some kangaroo that occasionally hops around. As I have already said on this road, forget the phone, if not the satellite ones that every good guide who will accompany you for excursions will have. If you hire a car, don't forget gasoline and water cans, as well as provisions in case you get hungry. There are few refreshment points, in about five hours by car we only met two or three.
Kings Canyon Resort Australia
Where to sleep? An Australian Outback experience is worth doing to the fullest and sleeping in absolute nothingness.
Without internet or telephone, as I did (there was only the hotel telephone for emergencies). The Kings Canyon Resort it is a hotel made up of small bungalows, rooms with bathroom and bathtub "with a view" and a breakfast room located in the local restaurant. Practically in the middle of the road with nothing around it.
Australians, it must be said, are very good at enhancing what they have even if what they have is consisting of red earth and lots of silence. The points from which to observe the sunset and sunrise are different at Kings Canyon Resort and an aperitif is set up at sunset to make everyone appreciate what nature has to offer. As if you needed an extra incentive to see the wonderful sun set over Kings Canyon, inside the Watarrka National Park.
The structure of the Hotel
The Hotel also offers the experience in the evening Under a Desert Moon, a dinner for up to ten couples by candlelight and under the moonlight, with a personal chef and local dishes accompanied by excellent wines. Personally, I enjoyed the experience very much even if the howls of the dingoes in the distance were not entirely reassuring.
The rooms are large, well furnished and with a peculiarity that I will never forget: a mega round tub placed in front of the window, so as to bathe while admiring the Kings Canyon. Obviously I didn't take a bath, but I preferred the shower also for time requirements, but the idea seemed nice to me and also very bizarre.
From here you can leave for some excursions, and more trekking, but also to go hiking with a helicopter for hire, thus flying over the Australian Outback and Kings Canyon. Personally I had the opportunity to do it, but I didn't feel it, I was so overwhelmed by the trip that I thought there would be an opportunity to do it again the following day and instead… I was wrong. If you decide to take the helicopter tour then, send me one
