Continuing my mission to discover the most characteristic and famous pubs of London, last night I decided to dedicate myself toAnchor & Hope, a gastro-pub reviewed with 5 stars by Time Out London.
It is located in Waterloo, near the Old Vic theater and very close to the underground station as well as the trains, and is the ideal place for a "pre-show" dinner or a quick beer.
The restaurant is divided into two areas, one dedicated to the restaurant and the other where you can sip a pint or a glass of wine with friends.
It is not particularly large, but fortunately, being only Tuesday we only had to wait a few minutes to be able to sit at the table.
It is not possible to book and the menu varies from day to day according to the mood of the chef and what the market offers, so rest assured that the choice will always be among excellent quality dishes.
The atmosphere is very welcoming: soft lights, tables in raw wood, large paintings hanging on the dark walls give a touch of color to the warm and hushed environment, the perfect place to spend a cold London evening.
The service, on the other hand, is typically English, punctual but lacking in human warmth, but never mind, given that the staff remains polite and precise in any case.
Last night's menu offered typical dishes of the English tradition, such as pheasant, various kinds of sausages, potato and lamb soup, but there were also excellent solutions for fish lovers.
The wines are priced slightly above the average of English pubs, but this is due to the focus that theAnchor & Hope hands to the kitchen, and therefore also the wines are in line with the quality of the dishes.
The prices are still excellent, given the quality offered and the environment, and for a dinner for three people, with wine, cover charge and dessert, the price is around £ 35.
The only flaw, but if we look it could also be a point in favor, is the timing in the table service, which unlike most pubs is more dilated, so take all the time you need for a proper dinner , especially if you need to take a break from the fast pace of London.
