Where to eat typical in Innsbruck, where to eat something typical without spending a fortune, here are the reviews of two places in Austria for your holiday: Stiftskeller and Cammerlander Tapabar.
Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, the fifth largest city in Austria, is a quiet resort, but at the same time with a sparkling atmosphere, in particular for its character as a destination much loved by active, sporty tourists, attracted by both alpine skiing and hiking mountain.
Where to eat in Innsbruck
Wandering around the center, in the evening, many signs invite us to enter. A walk may confuse ideas rather than clarify them. You can find everything: from the traditional Tyrolean tavern, to the American pub with a menu based on maxi burgers, to oriental fusion cuisine or elegant sushi bars.
For my personal taste, I opted for a solution more in line with the territory, choosing a large brewery with a kitchen. This is the Stiftskeller, in Stiftgasse, a very full historical center, a stone's throw from everything. If you come from the other entrance, it will seem like a luxury restaurant, but don't be afraid.
Strong dishes are those of the Tyrolean cuisine (frankfurters in all sauces, soups of all kinds), combined with those of more generic continental and Central European extraction (with potatoes in any form) and the Viennese schnitzel, a must-have.
The main room of the restaurant is very large, with medieval-style decorations, wooden tables and mezzanines. Adjacent, there is also an area more dedicated to those who come for a single beer, or a quick snack, near the bar counter.
The service is average, the dishes are good and abundant, the beer is excellent, the price is very interesting.
Quick lunch in Innsbruck
If I recommended something typical about dinner, for lunch I would opt for something different instead: the Cammerlander Tapabar, in Marktplatz, on the banks of the Inn and close to the pedestrian area of the historic center. Tapas in Innsbruck… why? Why I felt like eat something different, perhaps more Mediterranean, even if the main tapas (or tasting dishes) were based on local cheeses and meats. But the presentation changes its appearance.
But it is the location that boasts the lion's share, not so much for the position on the side of the road, where all the traffic still passes, but for a very simple but equally important fact in a mountain location: if there is a ray of sunshine, here you get it in full, so much so that in February you risk having to put on short sleeves for the warmth you enjoy. In fact it is one of the few clubs in Innsbruck that boasts more covered outside than inside, a perfect place for a business lunch break, or a snack at any time after you get off the slopes or mountain paths. Remember, the sun never fails here.
As for the dishes, they are definitely plentiful, in particular the large tasting plate, based on cold cuts, cheeses and various side dishes, is more than enough for a lunch for two people. Furthermore, the tradition of serving tapas as a complement to drinks is respected, so you will find an additional small snack. On balance, you spend on average, I would say the right. But this place deserves above all for the sun that you can enjoy. Absolutely.
