Who, looking at the map of the Mediterranean and taking a little journey with the imagination, are you unable to imagine a huge number of dream places enclosed in the perimeter of our beautiful sea? All those who start looking for a location for summer holidays they are certainly spoiled for choice between renowned and touristy centers, unspoiled places, more and less expensive destinations.
Looking closer at our beloved map, set between two authentic jewels like the island of Sicily and the distant Lampedusa there she is, Malta. A tiny state member of the European community, with an unimaginable pride in having the euro as its national currency. A mini rocky and barren archipelago for most of its extension, but which will not fail to excite and make those who accept the challenge of discovering it dream.
Since the small nation is conveniently accessible from daily flights of the company Easy Jet the presence of tourists has increased considerably, but the situation is always liveable at any time of the year. If we then add that the accommodation facilities (hotels above all) are not expensive at all, here you can spend a nice holiday in a place that not everyone knows with very affordable costs.
By analyzing in detail the various offers, those looking for more evening movement can choose to stay in the Valletta area (the capital), Sliema or Paceville. All three places are very popular with the very young. Those who prefer a holiday dedicated to Relax can choose a property in the area of Mellieha or even on the island of Gozo: in these places peace reigns in all senses; few people compared to the rest of the island, few clubs and more opportunities to take the after-dinner walk in complete tranquility.
However, if you want something different for an evening, just walk 7 km and go to the tourist town of Bugibba which offers a beautiful and very popular promenade, restaurants and various pubs.
The first thing to do on a Malta holiday immediately after landing with the plane is rent a car even before having the first coffee, even small and battered it makes no difference; many people decide to travel by bus, but they lose the freedom that this small country offers its visitors, they lose the thrill of driving on the left (as in Anglo-Saxon countries, there is absolutely nothing to fear because you get used to the first curve), it loses much of the essence that the island can offer.
In any case, whether you have taken my advice for good or not, let's start our tour. A holiday week in Malta it is enough to really do everything. The archipelago is rich in history, evidenced in the first place by the houses where the locals live which may very often appear old and uncared for but which do not hide all their charm; what strikes the visitor is the large number of churches present on the territory; every small town has its own: they are all beautiful and above all huge.
From this we understand the Catholic soul of the whole country. In some cases they are visible even before entering the city because they dominate the rest of the buildings in the true sense of the word. Still on the subject of history there are to visit megalithic temples of significant interest and, among many things, Mdina, the old capital before the privilege was transferred to Valletta. It is a beautiful example of a fortified village where it will be a pleasure to take a walk through its alleys.
But undoubtedly the emozioni stronger and more true that Malta has to offer gives her the sea. It is truly present in all shapes and sizes: there are coves with pebbles, sandy bays, totally rocky beaches and places (especially in the southern part) where the sea is wonderful even if not for swimming: I'm talking about the famous "Dingli Cliffs”, Famous for being real natural fortresses; a spectacle of nature especially when viewed from a boat. The main island has from north to south many known points and others less known where to spend a few hours in complete relaxation.
Il advice is to make a daily schedule and change at least 2-3 beaches per day (at least one in the morning and one in the evening would allow you to complete the tour in the 7 days foreseen by a normal weekly trip). Two are also inevitable boat excursions par excellence: the island of Comino and the island of Gozo.
Cumin it is a real stone in the middle of the sea. It is in fact a practically uninhabited place with plants that do not exceed half a meter in height. The view would also leave something to be desired were it not that this rock has the Blue Lagoon, the most beautiful beach in the entire archipelago with its blue water so intense and transparent that it is the envy of even the Caribbean. The really important thing is to know that it is not the only existing beach: many believe so and lurk there for the whole day making it, at certain times, crowded in an unimaginable way. However, it is enough to arm yourself with a little patience and start walking to find a solution: a few hundred meters along the perimeter you can find lonely coves with sea, however, of an above average level.
The second excursion, this more demanding, is atGozo island. The funny thing is that the ferry to reach it payable on return; the outward journey is done without having a ticket. So much, they say, sooner or later you will have to go back, quite right? Seriously, after a visit to Victoria in the cooler hours of the early morning (main city where you can freely walk around the fortified village and reach the highest part that allows the view of the whole island) you start the search for the most beautiful beaches: there are very special ones and one above all strikes the attention of the tourist; it can be reached after a good ten minutes by car via a dirt road with a single lane (if you meet a car that is turning back it is difficult to pass in two show that you have in front of your eyes once you reach the location will be nothing short of wonderful: a crystal clear sea with shades of green that creeps into an inlet between two promontories, a tiny pebble beach made especially for a few close friends, a truly rustic-style mini-bar that cheers you up with cool drinks when needed, a true paradise which offers the possibility of a relaxing bath but also of diving from the rocks. Absolutely nothing is missing.
This, in summary, is Malta. A holiday in such a place, even if little advertised, is always worth trying. And to be redone if one has the desire and above all the time. A very beautiful and special memory that I hope to relive as soon as possible in first person to be back in a little paradise at dream prices.
