Venafro, Molise: historical heritage and cuisine

The Plain of Venafro

Coming from Rome (San Vittore del Lazio exit), after passing the Tre Torri pass (or the Nunziata Lunga tunnel), the extended plain of Venafro. The plain borders with Abruzzo, Lazio and Campania; it is limited by the massifs of Matese and Mainarde; and is crossed by the Volturno river.

The historical center

Among the beauties of this small town I cannot fail to introduce you to its historic center. And it is from here, from the historic center, that I want to start the tour of this town.

The tour that I propose starts from Venafro Cathedral. The Cathedral is located in an isolated position with respect to the old part of the city, immersed in the green of the olive tree park and with the mountain of S. Croce placed as a guard behind him.

Leaving the Cathedral continue for via Duomo and at the end of the descent, we meet a large square where, in the fourteenth century, the Church and the Convent of S. Francesco were built. Continuing along via Duomo, we find the Church and the Convent of S. Chiara, today the seat of archaeological Museum.

Continue reaching via Cavour, where you will find the Church of the Annunziata, an authentic jewel of Baroque art. Continue along the nearby Via De Utris and take the steep climb at the end of which you will find a representation of the Saints Martyrs (Nicandro, Marciano and Daria, protectors of the city) made by Giovanni Pardi.

Then reach the Pandone Castle, very well preserved and properly restored, which you can visit for only € 4, enjoying a spectacular view of the city, discovering the wonders of the museum inside.

The walk continues in the direction of Piazza Cimorelli, where you will find: the Caracciolo Tower, the Town Hall, the monument to the Flag and the monument to the fallen of Torquato Tamagnini.

The area of the springs

Descending from the historic center, passing through its interior, you reach the area of the springs, with the lake, the Liberty building (recently renovated and returned to the public) and the four spouts.

In the direction of Isernia, a few kilometers from the town, you will find the Basilica of S. Nicandro, entrusted to the custody of the Capuchins.

Padre Pio was also hosted in the convent, and today the place is a destination for pilgrimages and a reference point for the people of Venafrano.

In addition to this extraordinary historical and cultural heritage, Venafro also offers spaces for both daily and weekly entertainment and recreation. For those who do not want to dwell on the beauties that this area has to offer, it should be noted that the numerous premises on Corso Campano, come alive with life especially during the weekend. The stroll along the Corso is the master, and the music of the various clubs animates the street.

What to eat in Venafro

Finding ourselves in Molise, obviously the reference to popular cuisine and ai cannot be missing typical products of the territory. Among the various products of the Venafrano area, theAureo oil, native product, and the baked tarallo with fennel. Also try the meats and cheeses produced by the locals.

If you are in the busy via Colonia Giulia, and you want to taste some excellent Molisani products, make a stop at "Sin of Gluttony”, A small shop full of surprises.

If you also want to enjoy good food, know that all the places have excellent dishes for you to taste. You will certainly not be disappointed!
