Yeoman Warders, the keepers of the Tower of London

Yeoman Warders, the keepers of the Tower of London

To guard the beautiful Tower of London have been here since 1845, the Yeoman Warders, also known as Beefeaters (beef eaters).

Created by Henry VII in 1485, this is the oldest surviving British military corps. The red and gold uniforms are still those of the Tudor style. The Yeomen of the Guard play a role purely ceremonial and there are about 30 ceremonies a year, no more. The most curious thing is that there are only 60 (plus 6 officials), drawn from retired members of the British Army, Royal Marines and Royal Air Force, but not the Royal Navy. Furthermore, all Yeomen are between 42 and 55 years old.

There are media four vacancies each year and the Lord Chamberlain has the task of suggesting to the sovereign the names of possible replacements. You can only become Yeoman Warders after serving for at least 22 years in the British military. What do you think, would you like to do this job?
