Montmartre is the neighborhood located in the hill in northern area of Paris, of which it represents the highest point, known for the Sacred Heart Basilica placed on its summit and for having been the center of bohemian life during the Belle Epoque.
Sull 'origin of the name of Montmartre there are two hypotheses, it could derive from Mont Martis (the mountain of Mars), or the name could derive from the notation le mont du martyre (the mountain of martyrdom), because, according to legend, it was the place where he was beheaded Saint Denis, first bishop of Paris.
During the'Napoleonic era when it was decided that Paris should become the most beautiful city in Europe, houses were built with large plots of land. Make sure to be up there for them at sunset, enjoy the street performers, take some photos and then maybe go and look for the famous vineyard on the Montmartre hill or the Muro dei Ti Amo in the city which is right nearby.

If you want some advice on where to eat, I tell you 48 rue Condorcet. The place is located just below Montmartre, it is very small and you will have to be really lucky to find a place. Alternatively, you can always call and book if you speak French well. Here every evening is a magic and the dishes offered are typical and the cuisine is truly incredible.
Curiosities of Montmartre
A curiosity, which few actually know, is that Theo van Gogh lived in Montmartre, brother of the better known Vincent. Theo was a collector of paintings and a merchant. If you want to find his front door and his house, all you have to do is go to number 54 of boulevard Montmartre.
