The review of Moeders, a restaurant that offers typical Dutch dishes, run by an Italian family. A place to try, not only for the dishes, but also for its characteristic atmosphere.
The first time I came by Moeders it was a couple of years ago. I had read a few reviews online and the dishes seemed interesting to me, plus it was one of the few Dutch kitchens in the center of Amsterdam. It is not so obvious for a big city to find something local. Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese restaurants are crazy, but if in Amsterdam you are looking for a restaurant that offers a traditional menu, you will hardly find it and I wanted to eat something typical Dutch.
The first time, I said, I was left with a dry mouth. Arrived there in the afternoon for the sake of booking for the same evening, I was told that the place was full for the three days to follow. Here, I remember that I was so bad, but so bad that I went to have a beer in the first useful place.
Moeders from Amsterdam: book by mail
Second time in Amsterdam, I booked by mail at Moeders two weeks before and I recommend you do it if you want to try this cuisine too - which I recommend. By going to the site it is very easy to book, just fill out a form. The booking confirmation will arrive by email, where however you will also be written to remind you, on the day of your dinner / lunch, to give a telephone confirmation. From Moeders they wait up to 30 minutes, but then they give your table away if you don't show up. I would say it fits, since when I saw it it was always packed.
Why try this venue
But let's get to the important things, why did I like this restaurant so much, enough to recommend and review it here? First of all for its history. Moeders means mom and the place itself is lined with photographs of mothers and women. Mothers with their children and mothers with other mothers, mothers with friends or mothers alone. Since I went to Moeders on my solo trip with my son, it felt like the place to be for my last night in Holland. The restaurant I was saying is upholstered with
The story of Moeders in Amsterdam
The history of the restaurant, which opened several years ago, is that of a Dutch family who started making local cuisine in the center of Amsterdam. At its inauguration, the family asked all friends and acquaintances to bring them dishes and tableware. Which still today are the plates and crockery on which all customers, myself included, eat. The family, which I met on this occasion, among other things speaks Italian very well because they lived for a few years in Turin. The staff however only speaks English.
The menu
Let's move on to the dishes. If you are Vegetarians there will be something for you too, but it must be said that most of the dishes at Moeders are meat based, at least the main ones. If you are intolerant to gluten or lactose, the same you will find several places, all reported. There are different soups, as well as salads, while the first courses or rather the unique dishes are meat or vegetable and cheese dishes. Unfortunately, I was unable to taste the desserts because being in the company of my son, right at the end we were no longer able to entertain him, he was too tired. All the more reason to come back anyway.
The rating is very good, as is my overall rating. For the little ones they have different games to keep at the table, but it is not possible to leave them free in the room because this is not very big and the children would be in the way of the waiters. Prices are reasonable, in line with Amsterdam restaurants.
