Discover Lazio through the Tuscia, here are five places that are worth a visit and a trip, during a low cost holiday in Italy.
La Tuscia coincides with the territory of the province of Viterbo, inUpper Lazio. It has recently been the protagonist of the TV series “Il Bosco”, which introduced us to the capital, Viterbo, and the dense beech forest of the Cimini Mountains.
But Tuscia is much more. Here are five things that you just cannot miss during a journey to discover this land, between nature, history and food and wine.
Tuscia lakes
Three large volcanic lakes occupy the Tuscia from north to south: the lake of Bolsena, That of Vico and Bracciano.
The first is also the largest and hosts two small green islands in its waters, Bisentina Island and Martana Island. The villages that surround it are worth a visit, including Capodimonte, Bolsena and Montefiascone.
Lake Vico, in Caprarola, is the one least touched by human intervention: along its coast only a few restaurants, private houses and establishments, the rest is nature and lots of green.
Finally, Lake Bracciano is the lake of the Romans, the most touristic, capable of offering precious treasures such as the Orsini-Odescalchi Castle.
Caprarola
One of the villages in the territory of Lake Vico, Caprarola hosts the fabulous Palazzo Farnese, a majestic sixteenth-century residence built for the nephew of Pope Paul III Farnese.
Great artists of the time, from Sangallo to Vignola, worked on the construction of this pentagonal structure with an internal courtyard.
The Scala Regia, some internal rooms, such as that of the Globe, and the beautiful Italian gardens that culminate in the Casina del Piacere.
Park of the Monsters
It is a unique work in the world, the Villa of Wonders, also known as the Sacred Wood or Park of the Monsters.
It is located in the municipality of Bomarzo, in the province of Viterbo. The Italian gardens respect the order and harmony typical of the sixteenth-century Mannerist era, while the figures of monsters, dragons and mythological beings sculpted in peperino do not follow any organizational rules and make the Park truly one of a kind.
Calcata
One of the favorite destinations of the Romans for a trip out of town. It is a town perched on a tuff spur awarded the Touring Club Orange Flag.
Of Faliscan origin and medieval structure, Calcata was abandoned because it was judged unsafe by a decree of the 30s and today it has been repopulated thanks to artists and scholars who have made this village their favorite place.
Civita di Bagnoregio
Note as "The city that dies”Civita di Bagnoregio can be defined as the small fragile jewel of Tuscia.
Built on a tuff spur in the Valle dei Calanchi, it is connected to Bagnoregio by a strait bridge closed to traffic.
Inside the village you can breathe a rarefied atmosphere, of other times. Stone houses, small shops, typical restaurants and glimpses of authentic beauty on the surrounding area!
