Even if the high water season is coming to an end, it is always a good thing to know what to do when you are planning a visit to Venice and do not want to arrive in the lagoon unprepared. So here are 5 information / tips to better organize yourself:
- To read the tide forecasts and understand them, you need to know that the tide is starting to be considered "High water" starting from 80 cm, that the high water lasts a couple of hours (approximately, depending on how high it is) around the peak time, that the period in which it is likely to be found is from October to March, that not the whole city goes " below ”but that depending on the height more or less areas will be wet and obviously that Piazza San Marco is the first to be affected by this phenomenon.
- Before leaving I think it is better to download an application that allows you to know in real time what the tide level is and the forecasts for the next two days, so as to always be ready. The best I have found are Hi! Tide Venezia (found for both Apple and Android devices) or Venice Tide (for Windows operating system), with which you can also check the situation in some key places in the city.
- Better to avoid the typical and terrible scene of the walk in the water with bare feet. If you arrive without having brought the boots suitable for the situation from home, do not be alarmed: you will certainly find them in every shop just outside the railway station or even at the stalls in Piazzale Roma, the prices will certainly not be the cheapest but you can usually not spend more than € 15 (then if you want them with daisies or leopard, obviously the cost will be higher!) and they will be an alternative souvenir! The alternative is to buy those in the "pocket" version that look like garbage bags with the sole that are certainly cheaper, you can reuse them and folded they fit in your handbag. If you want to prevent the risk, arm yourself with at least a couple of garbage bags: in moments of extreme emergency they help, but don't rely only on them because they get punctured easily and above all don't leave them around polluting the city.
- If you don't know the way to go to avoid putting your feet in the water, the only solution is to ask: Venetians and students will certainly be able to give you valuable advice and it will probably be the best opportunity to travel different itineraries and discover romantic and suggestive corners. . Alternatively, on the website of the Municipality of Venice you will find the itineraries to follow on the catwalks (do not forget, however, that these are removed in the three weeks of the Carnival).
- With high water transport is usually limited: some steamers are eliminated to avoid problems caused by the wave motion. On the ACTV website you can find the lines that are deleted on these occasions; in any case, when this occurs in piazzale Roma, voice messages are transmitted that the public transport service will be changed, while updates appear on the screens at the jetties.
