Five things not to be missed in Fermo, from the cremini to taste, to the Roman cisterns, passing through Piazza del Popolo.
Back from a short but intense trip to the south of the Walk, I was struck by a small big city: firm, capital of the Marche province of the same name and the vital heart of a wonderful territory. This town has a lot to offer: history, culture, art and excellent typical products: I leave you five tips, but I await your suggestions and your opinions in the comments.
Piazza del Popolo
Fermo immediately strikes its visitors welcoming them in its splendid Piazza del Popolo: a real open-air living room, which encloses a wide-ranging space between two rows of loggias. The beautiful Palazzo dei Priori overlooks the square, the oldest building in the city where the Municipality is located today as well as the art gallery.
The Globe
And it is right inside the Palazzo dei Priori that the second wonder of Fermo is located: a globe of 1713 completely hand made by a cartographer from Fabriano, Amanzio Moroncelli. The globe is kept in the hall of the same name, a splendid seventeenth-century library full of manuscripts thanks to the important donation of 15.000 works by a local gentleman.
Eagle Theater
A gem of Fermo is his Eagle Theater: with its about 1000 seats it is one of the largest eighteenth-century theaters not only in the Marches, but in all of central Italy. A very large stage, space for the musical company and numerous loggias for spectators make the theater the ideal space for masterful performances.
Roman cisterns
Its historical gem is Fermo Roman cisterns, a building work dating back to the Augustan age (40 AD) but still open today thanks to an excellent state of conservation. To reach them you have to venture below the current level of the city: you will thus discover 30 rooms arranged in three parallel rows, built with the primary purpose of accumulating water for the city of Fermo.
The Cremini
One cannot fail to include its typical cuisine in the 5 wonders of Fermo! THE cremini, soft fried sweet cream and served as an appetizer together with stuffed olives, big green olives stuffed with a spiced ground beef and fried in a crunchy batter. Not to mention the fresh pasta, and the second courses of meat and fish… in short, in Fermano there is only the embarrassment of choice.
