If you are in Molise set aside a day to visit the capital city, Campobasso. It stands on a plateau 800 meters high and the historic center is basically made up of two parts. The lower one, from the nineteenth century, has large tree-lined squares, paved streets and overlooked by many shops, public buildings of a certain importance, many in Fascist style.
In this part of the city it can be pleasant to dwell on the historian Lupacchioli coffee, a place that has existed since 1840 and is famous both for the pastry specialties of the Molise tradition and for the Poncio liqueur, a real delight. Lupacchioli is in Piazza Pepe, practically next to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore (in neoclassical style) and near the historic Savoy Theater. With the outdoor tables he makes good aperitifs accompanied by substantial snacks for € 4,50.
The oldest part of the city, on the other hand, climbs steeply up to Castle: here the urban aspect is different, the streets are narrow, the houses more modest, even if typical and alternating with elegant buildings. The walk - tiring - is accompanied by three beautiful Romanesque churches that you meet going up, also sections of the ancient fortification walls. The ascent culminates at the Monforte Castle.
All in white stone, quadrangular in shape, completely dominates the city. You visit the interior (without a ticket) and going up to the battlements walkway you have a beautiful view of the city and a large slice of the undulating and beautiful territory of Molise.
