    Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia



    Il archaeological park of Baratti and Populonia it is located in the municipality of Piombino and includes about 80 hectares between the slopes of the promontory of Piombino and the coast on the Gulf of Baratti. It is part of the Parks of Val di Cornia and was inaugurated in 1998, to make some archaeological areas and the new remains found in the archaeological excavations conducted in the area accessible from 1996 onwards.

    The park includes several sectors of the ancient Etruscan city of Populonia and inside the park there is an experimental archeology laboratory.

    In the Archaeological Park it is possible to access and make different routes based on the availability of time you have. The first path is that of Necropolis of San Cerbone, with tumulus and shrine tombs from the VII century BC-VI century BC, travel time one hour.

    The second is that of Via delle Cave: from Campo dell'Arpia a path leads to the Etruscan limestone quarries, with tombs dug into the rock of the IV-III century BC necropolis, travel time about two hours but along the way a magnificent glimpse of the Gulf of Baratti.

    Path of the Via del Ferro: a path between the lower part along the coast with the experimental archeology laboratory, allows you to visit the industrial districts of the ancient city, which house buildings for iron working (VI-III century BC), travel time one hour and thirty minutes.



    Via dell'Acropoli path, it is the least demanding for those with little time, it lasts about 50 minutes. The route reaches the top of the promontory where the remains of the first Etruscan settlements of Populonia are found.


    Route Via della Romanella which following the iron road leads to reach the traces of the ancient walls of Populonia and then climb up to the acropolis of the city retracing an ancient road. Journey time 2 hours and 30 minutes.


    Finally the path of the Via del Monastero through the via delle Cave it reaches the Benedictine Monastery of San Quirico. Extremely suggestive views and a journey that lasts two hours and thirty minutes.
