How to move in Bergamo and how to move from Bergamo airport to the city center, lower city and upper city of Bergamo. Find all the information you need in the post.
Maybe I'll be biased, but Bergamo it is really a beautiful city that definitely should be visited at least once. If it is true that it is not exactly easy to reach it by car, you can take advantage of the numerous Ryanair flights from various Italian cities: Alghero, Bari, Brindisi, Cagliari, Catania, Lamezia, Naples, Palermo, Pescara and Trapani. In the post, I will try to give you the best tips on how to move in Bergamo. I will help you organize your trip, for a few days or even just a short weekend. Ready to take note?
Getting around in Bergamo
Once you get in airport the most comfortable and fastest way to reach the Town center is through theAirport Bus. The rides are available every day every 20 minutes, the ticket is quite cheap. The journey takes about 10 minutes (depending on traffic) and arrives at Bergamo Central Station. Alternatively you can opt for the taxi which is located at the arrivals exit.
From the station to the city center
Once you get in Central Station you can take a tour of the city center (lower city) directly on foot. In fact, the avenue (Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII) starts from the station, lined on both sides by shops and restaurants. Going up to Porta Nuova on the left you will cross Via XX Settembre, the Via dello Bergamo shopping. In addition to the shops there are clearly other very interesting things to visit in the area, such as for example Frizzoni Palace (seat of the Municipality of Bergamo), the Statue of Cavour and the Monument to the Partisan.
Very nice is certainly the Donizzetti Theater which is on the side of the Sentierone, the tree-lined and paved avenue that crosses the avenue on the right (always going up from the station). Walking around a city is definitely the best way to experience it authentically! It is always nice to alternate a more cultural walk in the city with time to devote to shopping or relaxation, perhaps in a nice bar or restaurant. What do you think?
The Upper Town
If the lower town is beautiful, the upper town of Bergamo it is wonderful and it is the part that most of all attracts tourists (and not only). To reach it from the train station you can take theATB number 1 (a ride is very cheap) and get off at one of the stops along the walls in the upper city (and then walk up through the ZTL streets) or at the terminus at the Marianna. Here, among other things, is the famous bar / pastry shop of the same name. Or you can get off at the funicular stop and with the same ticket reach the upper town by funicular. You will enjoy this experience very much, it is truly suggestive. Let yourself be welcomed by the magical atmosphere that you will find once you arrive.
A lovely atmosphere
From there you will find yourself at the beginning of the main street of the Upper Town (Via Gombito then Via Colleoni). You will immediately be immersed in the medieval atmosphere of this enchanting place old village. The street is lined with historic buildings such as the Torre del Gombito, Old Town Square, considered among the most beautiful in Italy, the Palazzo della Biblioteca Civica, with restaurants, pubs and shops. If you also want to discover the highest part of the Upper Town, walk all the way until you reach Piazza Mascheroni and then the Marianna. From there, go past Porta Sant'Alessandro. Just after, on the right, you will find the San Vigilio funicular which will take you to the hill of the same name from which you can enjoy a beautiful view. The view will captivate you, I have no doubts, and you can also take beautiful walks. Arriving at the highest point of a medieval village is always a special moment.
