But Bologna is also the city ofmodern art and not only classical, as you might think, but also modern as well Contemporary. It must be remembered that Bologna hosts one of the most important exhibitions dedicated to contemporary art in Italy, that is Artefiera.
Artefiera is the International Fair of Modern and Contemporary Art, which reached its 2017st edition in 41 under the direction of Angela Vettese and is the longest-running event of modern and contemporary art in Italy. The event takes place every year at the end of January, with over 2000 works exhibited and numerous collateral events involving the entire Bolognese town.
But Bologna is not only the city of Artefiera, it also hosts an important museum center at the center of which we find the Mambo, the Museum of Modern Art of Bologna as well as the seat of the Institution Bologna Musei, located in Via Don Minzoni 14.
The Mambo is located in the heart of the cultural district of the Manifattura delle Arti, in the Porto district of Bologna. The particular building that houses it is the former bread oven, built in 1915 and subsequently enlarged in 1928-1929. At the end of its recovery project and its renovation, the MAMbo has become one of the most important Italian museums dedicated to the contemporary and covers an area of over 9.500 m². The Mambo is a very particular museum both for its casing and for what it contains, a must if you pass by here. And admission is free every first Sunday of the month. And, please, do not neglect a visit to his Bar / Café, artistic enough.
But it is not only Mambo that contains modern and contemporary art in Bologna. The city center is filled with small interesting galleries that pop up almost everywhere.
One of my favorites above all is the Gallery Ono Contemporary Art, located in Via Santa Margherita a few steps from Piazza Maggiore and is a gallery dedicated to art in the most varied forms, from photography to graphics, from video art to installations, from books to vinyls to design objects. A really curious little place, built on several levels, where you can find everything and more, where to buy some nice photographic book and where to participate in one of the many opening aperitifs of some small exhibition. in essence, Ono Arte is a gallery and concept store that also houses a lounge bar. Admission is free.
Another interesting local contemporary art gallery is the Gallery Farini Concept, in via San Vitale, a perfect fusion of contemporary art, history and vision of the future. The exhibition venue of over 400 square meters is located in a beautiful XNUMXth century palace, Palazzo Fantuzzi, a unique and prestigious place, as well as the residence of the Bolognese Renaissance. In this gallery, history and contemporary find their particular dimension among the various Italian and international works of art on display. Peering from the window of the gallery, you can only enter and observe its contents.
The historic art gallery is located in via Farini ovens, which since 1967 has been a Bolognese reference point for lovers of painting, photography and figurative art in general. In its long activity this gallery has set up over four hundred exhibitions, exhibiting many new proposals of contemporary art but also offering great events dedicated to personalities and artists such as De Chirico, Depero, Fontana and many others.
However, these are perhaps the three most famous of the many particular and small galleries found in the center of Bologna. If you can take a nice walk in the center you will find many others in the most unexpected alleys.
