Castelmola in Sicily, the Turrisi bar and a wonderful view overlooking the sea, above Taormina.
castelmola is a small town in the province of Messina that hosts just over 1000 inhabitants. It is a tourist place, as it is located above the famous tourist resort of Taormina.
The town is located on the top of a summit and its origins date back to the pre-Hellenic period. The first name was Mylai dating from the Iron Age. After several settlements by the Syracusans, Castelmola passed under the rule of the Byzantines until 902 when the entire country was devastated by Saracens, who then headed for Taormina; from 1738 it became part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and in 1860 voted to annex it to the Kingdom of Italy.
Finally, in the 1928 it was annexed to the municipality of Taormina. Despite the small size of this small Sicilian village, the places to see are many and all offer a breathtaking view.
The first place is there Piazza di Sant'Antonio located at the entrance to the town and is the belvedere on the underlying town of Taormina, which will leave you speechless; on the right we find the Gate of the Saracens, whose stairways lead to Castle, of which the mighty Norman walls remain. On the left, however, we find the San Giorgio bar and the stairways that, in addition to taking you to the church of St. George, patron saint of the country, reach the so-called "Punta Cicchitta“, A place where you can admire a beautiful panorama, from which you can also see the Greek Theater of Taormina.
Continuing from Piazza Sant'Antonio, you arrive inside the heart of the village where it is Piazza Duomo with the church of St. Nicholas of Bari, rebuilt in the 30s; right in this square we find one of the cult places of Sicily or the Bar Turrisi, famous for a rather particular feature: everything that is found inside this bar, built on 4 levels, is phallic in shape to celebrate man's virility and fecundity.
Finally, you can admire the panorama from different points of the country, especially from the hairpin bends that are there to reach it and from the terraces that are in different alleys of the city, from which it is possible to admire beyond Taormina e Giardini Naxos, Also Calabrian coast and the imposing volcano Etna.
Castelmola, is a place where you will leave us a piece of heart, I assure you because it will bewitch you with its small alleys, the breathtaking views and the tranquility that this small village gives, but you have to fully experience every place so I recommend you to stay overnight in one of the many B & Bs that the place offers.
