The Royal Palace or Kungsliga Slottet is located on the island of Old Town and is the most important building in Stockholm, the official residence of the rulers of Sweden, where the changing of the guard also takes place.
The most famous changing of the guard that we know of is in fact in London, but not only that, even here in Sweden there is a very well known and followed changing of the guard. The palace was built in the 18th century on the ruins of the original medieval castle, destroyed by fire in 1697. The complex consists of four buildings arranged symmetrically to form a square: this is where the picturesque ceremony of the changing of the guard takes place.
The changing of the guard ceremony at the Royal Palace in Stockholm lasts about 40 minutes and takes place on the esplanade of the square, and is accompanied by the Military Band. The parade does not take place every day of the year. From May to August: Monday to Saturday at 12.15 pm, while on Sundays and public holidays it takes place at 1.15 pm.
In April, September and October the changing of the guard takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12:15 pm and on Sundays at 1:15 pm.
From November to March the changing of the guard takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12:00 noon and on Sundays at 00:00 am.
The changing of the guard ceremony is free and open to the general public. It is a historical tradition dating back to the time of the Swedish monarchy and represents the soldiers' commitment to the protection of the Royal Palace and the royal family. It is a unique and exciting experience not to be missed if you are visiting Stockholm.
