Il Coliseum is one of the most beautiful works in the world and is theRoman amphitheater most famous located at downtown Rome capable of holding up to 70.000 spectators. The works began during the reign of Vespasian in the area between the Palatine, Esquiline and Celio. Vespasian, returned to the people what the tyrant-Nero had wanted only for himself.
At the time of ancient Rome, the Colosseum was used for gladiator shows and other public events such as reenactments of famous battles and dramas based on classical mythology. Under the arena of the Colosseum there were numerous corridors and rooms intended to accommodate the gladiators and wild beasts which could be brought to center stage by forklifts and ramps to the monument. The Colosseum is included in the list of World Heritage Sites by Unesco in 1980.
Among the numbers of the Colosseum it is good to remember:
Circumference 527 m
Height 57 m
Capacity 70.000 seats
Major axis of the ellipse 188 m
Minor axis of the ellipse 156 m
The first 3 floors consist of arches framed by semi-columns, the fourth floor is divided by pilasters and the poles that supported the large clove veil to shelter the spectators from the sun were inserted.
Dimensions of the arena 76 mx 46.
If you want to go and see it from the inside, consider that every day, especially in those with sun and pleasant temperatures, there is always a nice queue outside. The cost of the ticket is € 9 plus 3 for exhibition supplement (€ 4,50 plus € 3 for citizens of the European Union between 18 and 24 years).
