Along the Sile cycle path, a path for lovers of nature and open air paths. Panoramic points for bird watching and itineraries for the whole family.
The route can be done starting from different cities, for those close to the Veneto, I recommend starting from Quarto d'Altino, in the province of Venice. From here you cycle back along the famous Roman road "la via Claudia Augusta" which, you think, connected Altino to Bavaria. In the small town of Altino you can visit the National Archaeological Museum, built in 1960 and outside this you can find the excavation area, open to the public and UNESCO heritage.
Ready, go on Sile cycle path! The path is slow and sinuous completely in the middle of the green and initially runs along the river Zero and then directly embraces the Sile. You will then reach the famous “towpaths”, or embankments dominated by a dirt road that was used to drag oxen and the ancient Venetian boats, the so-called burchi, vintage transport boats very useful for the first commercial exchanges.
Along this stretch but also further on you will find real ones wrecks of these boats, demolished in the 70s as a symbol of protest, now become shelters for water birds that are easy to spot. This area is exciting even if you walk it with the children, as they will be able to see various species of flying; therefore a stage bird watching it could be really fun! Furthermore the Sile Park, a protected area since 1991, tells the story of Venetian culture since the times of the Bronze Age.
Known as the "Green way“, This mostly flat cycle path leads to the town of Casale sul Sile, in the province of Treviso. From here the most fascinating stretch begins, you pass through Villa Mantovani and tranquility reigns supreme in the landscape until you reach Casier, where you can rent electric boats and visit the entire Sile natural park "by water".
The boat rental is nicely called "BarchiAMO":). Also unmissable is the Green Lake, perhaps stopping in the homonymous restaurant for lunch. The house specialties? Grilled meat and ice cream .. just to get back on the pedals lightly. Currently, to get to this area there is a small temporary deviation from the classic itinerary, but don't worry, everything is very well signposted! Another ten kilometers between reeds and ducks crossing the road and you will arrive in Treviso, the capital of the Veneto region and a very elegant city of Roman origin.
Ice cream break, walk downtown and enjoy the day!
The whole route is approx 40 km, definitely doable calmly, enjoying the landscape and stopping for some photos. It will take about 4-5 hours but it clearly depends on the pedaling, perfect for any bike lover therefore, even not used to the saddle.
From here you can go home comfortably on all trains, including bikes… and the ticket is valid all day! A tip for a simple Sunday and not too far away .. but that definitely leaves a good memory in the evening.
