Have you been to the Munich Oktoberfest and have you seen the girls show off beautiful dresses? Here those are the Dirndls, the Bavarian party dresses that women wear on special occasions.
Munich and Oktoberfest and an event that lasts for three weeks. If in these posts we talked about where to eat in Munich during Oktoberfest, where to sleep in Munich during the most famous beer festival in the world and how to get there, now we should also talk about how to dress.
No, we have not become a fashion blog, but we have decided to understand a little more about the particular clothes of the party that in Munich and in all of Bavaria in general are also worn on the days of Oktoberfest. Let's start now by talking about the Dirndls.
I Dirndl are the clothes that we are commonly used to see in the photos of Oktoberfest, the famous festival that takes place in Munich. However, these dresses are not only worn during Oktoberfest but on many other Bavarian occasions and celebrations. Actually when I was in Munich the last time I saw them wearing all the girls who were present at the party.
I looked for them a lot in the shops even in the city center of Munich, but they had prohibitive prices. Those are authentic clothes that you buy throughout the year and wear to all the parties in your city. Paying them a hundred euros for me who don't live in Germany wouldn't make sense. Although, to be honest, I also found some from 20 €, even if as you will imagine the quality was not good at all. So I preferred not to buy anything and postpone to another occasion.
Returning to the dress instead, I can tell you that the term dirndl once indicated a young woman, today the term is also used to indicate these clothes traditionally worn during Bavarian festivals in southern Germany in particular.
As far back as the nineteenth century, dirndl was theuniform of the Austrian servants, later becoming, around 1870, a high fashion dress for the women of the time.
The traditional Bavarian dress is composed of a guepiere, a blouse, a wide skirt and an apron that can then be customized by adding details that enhance one's shapes. If you feel like wearing it, know that they are not exactly cheap, the good ones of course, if you want to buy it instead just to show it off at your next Oktoberfest you can also find it in the German city for € 20.
Going to Oktoberfest without wearing a dress like this is a bit like going to a masquerade party without having a mask or to an elegant party without having shoes with heels. Choose your favorite color and get your dress, the one that suits you best or the one that reflects your taste in colors. In case, send us a photo, we will be happy to publish it.
