Eating fish in Trieste: Salumare and Buffet Da Angelina

Where to eat excellent fish in Trieste, the reviews of two restaurants, Salumare in Via di Cavana and the Buffet Da Angelina in via Cadorna. Here's what to order, how much to spend in Trieste for a lunch or dinner in the city.

I found the city of Trieste very interesting from a gastronomic point of view. In the central areas the locals stand side by side with each other in the streets most frequented by tourists, ranging from the famous cafes, all strictly marked as Historic premises, to wine bars, up to the most characteristic restaurants or trattorias. In this post, I will specifically focus on two tips for eat fish in Trieste.

The most typical trattorias carry the word "buffett ”which seemed curious to me.
However, having to choose where to eat on a late spring day, I decided to go for fish, after two days of tasty but "earthy" foods tasted in as many typical buffets, and also considered the not negligible maritime history of Trieste.

The proposals that I make to you here are therefore for a quick lunch and a more important dinner, also in terms of budget.
I enjoyed the place chosen for lunch, already for the name built as a curious play on words: it is called Salami and is located in via di Cavana, not far from one of the most famous museums in Trieste, the Revoltella.

1. Informal Salumare lunch

Salumare is a decidedly informal style restaurant, with somewhat improvised tables, stools and benches. A large whiteboard counter is centrally located and this is where you have to go to order dishes and drinks.

The offer of the day is clearly written right on the blackboard, between the catch of the day and a selection of canapés. To drink a wide choice of wines by the glass or beers. You pay, you leave your name and the order goes to the kitchen. You have to first be sure you have a place to sit because it cannot be booked and the clientele is not lacking.
However when the dish is ready you are called and go to collect.

I toast they were really delicious: with smoked salmon, with creamed cod, with fresh tuna, with fish pate, all spread on toast and crunchy. In combination I had taken a spritz from Trieste: here we must make a clarification, in order not to be disappointed. Spritz (in German to sprinkle) in these parts is synonymous with cold white wine mixed with sparkling water, with or without a slice of lemon. Very light, very refreshing, but not even remotely similar to the Aperol-based aperitif that we are used to consuming everywhere.
Even though the place filled up quickly no one came to ask for our table.

2. Elegant dinner from Buffet Da Angelina

The proposal for the evening is different, that is Buffet From Angelina in via Cadorna (not far from the Molo dei Bersaglieri). Despite the name "popular" it is a restaurant furnished with taste and with a very interesting menu. The highlight of the menu is the very rich appetizer, served in a large plate with compartments, each compartment a delight, from mussels to scallops, from crostini to creamed cod - inevitable here in Trieste but really delicious - to seafood salad and marinated sardines.

The appetizer is plentiful and not very cheap, so you can safely omit it if you want to eat the first courses, or frying, or grilled squid with polenta, or fish fillets. The dessert list is limited but they are all homemade. Good choice of wines and craft beers.

Il service is all female, very friendly and welcoming. The peculiarity: on the strip of wall that runs just above the level of the guests' seat, along the walls, there are the comments written by all those who spent a nice evening at Angelina's or ate good food.
