A walk in the Fondotoce Nature Reserve gives joy to the hearts of people who love nature all year round. In autumn the trees with the colored Indian Summer fireworks look like a painting, in winter the snow adorns the surrounding mountains creating a magical Winter Wonderland, in spring the birds invite for their cheerful concert with lively songs and in summer the beach entices.
THEprotected area where its name comes to a fraction of Verbania called Fondo Toce and to the Toce river. Lake Maggiore and its surroundings are rich in culture and beautiful art, while the Fondotoce Nature Reserve offers a tempting contrast. Today this wetland at the confluence of the Toce river with the Lake it is the homeland for migratory birds such as swallows in late summer, for cormorants and for a diversity of fish. The reed bed is ideal both for the incubation of many birds and for the reproduction of fish, for example for tench, pike and carp. However, the reeds still have another very important function: it is a "green filter"Which purifies the water of Lake Maggiore of pollutants.
To do the birdwatching there is a post office and bird information boards. Mammals such as fox and weasel, amphibia like the green frog and reptiles like the green lizard and the marsh turtle live in the natural area. A forest and a small but very pretty beach are part of the reserve and become popular with family members in the summer. Of the beach you can see theBeautiful island, One of the Borromean Islands. During a walk on the chimney that leads from the road to the beach it is worthwhile to look to the right where the Simplon mountains are.
A singularity of the Fondotoce Nature Reserve is the "Trapa natens verbanensis", There water chestnut of Verbano. It could be seen as a summer sister to the chestnuts that are so typical for the Piedmont mountains now in autumn.
The reserve is not just a paradise for animals, two hundred and forty plant species also thrive in the humid environmental constraint area. Different types of willow and fern give a particular atmosphere to the fairytale forest - from ferns there are two quite rare varieties and only available in the humid environment.
