1. Historic center of Giulianova: the Cathedral

We start our tour from the historic center and accompany history lovers on this guided tour: arrived in Giulianova village, near Corso Garibaldi there is the most important building in the city, the Cathedral of San Flaviano. Its construction, dating back to 1472, is dedicated to the Patriarch of Constantinople, whose remains it guards.
San Flaviano was the first example of an octagonal brick building, influenced by the Tuscan Renaissance. And its hemispherical dome is inspired by the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence.

The sculptor Francesco Coccia instead created the Baptistery in travertine and the high altar depicting the Crucifix, the Virgin and San Flaviano.

2. Giulianova north: the Sanctuary

At the end of Viale dello Splendore, in the northern part of the town, it rises the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima dello Splendore, which arose after a legend: on 22 April 1557 a farmer named Bertolino, while resting under an olive tree, had the vision of the Virgin enveloped in a dazzling light. Our Lady instructed him to report to the community his desire to build a sanctuary in that same place.
At the base of the olive tree a source of pure water gushed out, where even today people bathe to be blessed by the Madonna dello Splendore.
