Sleeping in Abruzzo in Barrea at the b & b La Scarpetta di Venere, a cheap bed and breakfast with a beautiful view, here is our review.
In Park of Abruzzo the small center of Barrea it is located at one end of the lake of the same name; a mirror of very green water in which the peaks of the mountains are reflected.
The old town is all perched and was surrounded by walls, which made it impregnable; of those fortifications there remain a door in the lower part and the towers of the castle in the upper part. A cliff overlooking the Sangro valley protects on one side. The paved alleys climb up, narrow between houses of pale stone, which in the evening is tinged with a beautiful golden color. The older center is off-limits to car traffic and this makes it very quiet and out of time.
Despite being frequented by tourists, this country is not expensive; in the shops you can buy food for a few euros, there are some restaurants with traditional food on the menu at decidedly “low” prices.
In the old part of Barrea there is a delightful B&B from the name The Slipper of Venus, which is a type of yellow and black orchid that blooms in the Park; the B&B is managed by Mrs. Florinda, who knows the rules of good hospitality well, is very kind, welcoming, tending to problem solving and prepares wonderful cakes that flood the house with a priceless perfume.
The breakfast is excellent, the rooms are comfortable and with hotel-level comfort. A small relaxing garden is located in front of the house and from there you can enjoy a beautiful view of the lake. There double with breakfast costs 80 euros.
In my experience there are attentions that are priceless and are part of the baggage of good hospitality; and if this treatment is offered in an already affordable structure, I appreciate it even more. This is the case of the Scarpetta di Venere, where all guests are given a ticket to visit the small antiquarium of the Safina civilization, which is located in the village and the aforementioned castle.
