Marmitte dei Giganti in Fossombrone, that's what they are

Le Giants' pots they are a natural and fascinating spectacle, almost a small canyon that can be seen looking out from the Diocletian's bridge near San Lazzaro di Fossombrone. The steep vertical walls are separated by only 13 meters and the height of these rocks is about 30 meters. From above I can assure you it is a beautiful sight.

But how are the Marmitte dei Giganti formed? Basically the river current transported pebbles that over the years, approx 140 million years, have modeled the banks by obtaining rounded cavities which today are occupied by ponds.

The Marmitte dei Giganti are located inside the State Natural Reserve of the Gola del Furlo, a site of great value for natureists, enthusiasts but also for citizens and tourists looking for suggestive landscapes.

The history of the Furlo is really interesting. First of all the name: in the past it was called Saxa Intercisa or Split Stone or Sasso Rotto, later it was called Petra Pertusa that is Pietra Perata. The name Furlo comes from Forulum, a small forum that was then popularized in Forlo and then Furlo.
The Etruscan people built the road connecting the two border towns Rome and Rimini, the road we know today as Flaminia which assumed this specific name only two centuries later when the consul Flaminio had it paved.

After irtomorrow, over the centuries it passed into the hands of Dukes of Urbino and consequently in the hands of the Pontifical State, until Mussolini fell in love with him, so much so that in the following years the forest militia immortalized him across the mountain with his profile. Eliminated by the partisans in 1944.

For those who want to make a longer stop at the Gole del Furlo and enjoy the food and flavors of the Marche region, we recommend a farmhouse in Fermignano.
