The visit to the Miramare Castle in Trieste, why it's worth it, how to get there and the entrance fee. Here's what to see in Trieste, read the post.
Miramare Castle is of unforgettable beauty. It is impossible to visit Trieste without allowing part of the day to discover this fortress with unique characteristics.
Or at least, that's not how castles are usually imagined. Today, however, it is a museum, where you can visit both the interior and the wonderful park outside.
Built in 1856 as home of Massimiliano D'Asburgo on a rocky spur, the goal was that it always overlook the sea. From any angle you looked at. Hence the name "miramare".
The interiors of the Miramare Castle
And in fact the impression one gets upon entering the castle is precisely that of being on a ship. And even the interior furnishings, the windows and the layout of the rooms are just right in marine style.
Inside the castle resided the archduke Maximilian of Habsburg, together with his wife Charlotte of Belgium. You will see the separate bedrooms. It is striking that they are very small rooms, unlike what one might expect from a luxury home.
The reason lies in the fact that the rooms also had to follow those of a ship and hence their small size. Walking through the interior of the castle you will immediately notice the distinction between the private rooms, in which blue prevails, and the public ones, where the predominant color is red.
The ground floor has a more familiar and intimate character, while the first floor, which was the one reserved for guests, features sumptuous ornaments and tapestries with imperial symbols. The style in which the castle was built is eclectic, i.e. a mix of gothic, renaissance and medieval.
The park of the Miramare Castle
If the interiors of the Miramare castle have given you an image of the noble life of the mid-1800s, the park will leave you surprised by the variety of valuable botanical species who meet there.
Ben 22 hectares of parkland, full of plants from all over the world. Just think that from Austria Maximilian had wagons and wagons brought out of earth and black pines to surround the castle and defend it from the Trieste bora. From Mexico, however, it brought many other plant species that enriched the beautiful park.
The view from the garden is lovely. We are in fact overlooking the sea, on the Grignano promontory, overlooking the Gulf of Trieste.
Trees, paths, ponds and gazebos, in perfect English romantic style, prevail in the east area. To the west, on the other hand, we find Italian gardens and well-tended flower beds around the small port. If you are passing through Trieste, do not miss a visit to this beautiful castle.
The castle is open every day from 9 to 19 and the entrance ticket costs 8 €.
