Ostra is an ancient village of about 7 inhabitants immersed in the warm colors of Marche hills. Just 15 kilometers from the sea and from the city of Senigallia, known for its "velvet beach", the town is enclosed by a perfectly preserved medieval wall, along which there are nine towers and the two access roads to the town .
Inside the walls, in the upper part of the historic center, it is located Piazza dei Martiri, the main hub of the country. Here overlook the civic tower, built in the sixteenth but restored in 1950 after the bombings that completely destroyed the church of San Giovanni of which the tower was the bell tower, the eighteenth-century town hall with an adjoining magnificent theater, and the church of San Francesco .
Food and accommodation
In the village there is a only hotel with the historic restaurant "The Cantinella”, Opened in the sixties. Here you can eat dumplings stuffed with duck, strigoli with mushrooms and sausage, and a delicious mixed fried meat and battered vegetables; but the dish that has made the restaurant famous is the "flame ice cream”, A vanilla parfait that is served on fire. For those who want to contain accommodation costs, it is possible to rent rooms or entire apartments in many historic buildings in the center on Airbnb.
To do
One of the most anticipated events every year is the "Night of the Sprevengoli”, Which is celebrated at the end of October and transforms the historic center of Ostra into the set of a horror film; in the cellars of the numerous noble palaces typical dishes and wines of the Marche tradition are served. The Sprevengoli in popular tradition are gods sprites which disturb people in their sleep, but which can be driven away with the festivities.
The municipality of Ostra, as well as many other neighboring towns, are also renowned for parties and popular festivals, unmissable opportunities for those who want to try the most characteristic flavors of the local Marche cuisine. Among the most renowned, that of Rabbit in Porchetta at the beginning of June, that of Pappardelle with wild boar ragout at the beginning of August, and that of Passatello in early July.
Another unmissable event is undoubtedly the "National Exhibition of Antiques and Artistic Crafts" which for almost 40 years has been held every year in the first weeks of August.
Not far from the historic center, another cultural attraction is the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rosa, built in 1754 to welcome numerous pilgrims visiting the miraculous shrine of the Virgin where, according to tradition, a girl placed a lily that remained fresh and fragrant for a long time as if it had just been picked.
