To visit in summer but also in winter for a romantic weekend: everything you need to know about the splendid village of Sperlonga.
I wanted to talk to you today about a small village that deserves to be considered one among the most beautiful in Italy.
The village I want to introduce you is Sperlonga, a small town in Lazio in Province of Latina, which overlooks its houses on the coasts of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Where is Sperlonga and how to reach it
Sperlonga is located 116 km from Rome and 114 km from Naples.
For those coming by car from the capital, it can be reached by taking the via Pontina (up to Terracina) and then continuing along the via Flacca.
For those traveling on the Autostrada del Sole Rome-Naples, the closest exit to Sperlonga is in Cassino.
Sperlonga is a perched town at the foot of Monte S. Magno between Terracina and Gaeta, and owes its name to the natural caves - speluncae - which open along the coast.
Sperlonga looks like a real movie set!
In fact, in the XNUMXs, the famous Italian actor Raf Vallone identified this place while shooting a film with Lucia Bosè.
The old village
The old part of the village is beautiful.
The houses, all perched on each other, can be reached through intertwined alleys made of ups and downs and stairways.
The houses are pure white, mixed with the typical colors of the seascape (blue, cream).
Long lines at times draw handrails, while the very clean streets of the center open up to squares or small terraces overlooking the sea that from time to time give a glimpse of a glimpse of the sea and the sky.
There are also numerous businesses that cut out their shops between small arches and narrow alleys.
A blue sea.
A blue sea and more is one of the characteristics of Sperlonga.
Sperlonga has received (for several consecutive years), the Blue Flag of the Fee, a symbol of high quality water and services for tourists.
The sea looks like a crystal: the water is very transparent, you have excellent visibility and while you bathe, you will be in the company of many fish swimming on the seabed.
The seafront is super equipped, suitable for tourists (at times perhaps too much if you are a lover of the wild), however it offers impeccable service.
When to visit Sperlonga
Especially in summer.
Like all seaside resorts, the village is filled with tourists who feed local life; but also in winter, for a relaxing and perhaps romantic day.
As for prices, let's say that the range is medium, tending to high in the middle of the season.
If you want to eat something good I recommend the Antico Caffè Trani, which is located in the main square of the historic center. Medium price range and really good dishes.
What is there to see
The Grotta di Tiberio is the great attraction of Sperlonga.
Just over a kilometer from the town, it forms a whole with the remains of the villa above. It seems that the Roman emperor liked to spend a long time in the cool stillness of the cave.
The city also enjoys a great naturalistic suggestion with two lakes: the circular one of S. Puoto and Long Lake, defined as "the eyes" of Sperlonga.
Not to be missed are the beautiful ones sandy beaches of Fontana, Canzatora, Salette, Bonifica.
Beyond the town lies the beach of Angolo, with the Grotta di Tiberio and, after the promontory of Ciannito, which juts out to the sea, the coast of Bazzano.
The last resort is that of the Dolls, on which the homonymous cave opens.
These places, in addition to being reachable by land, can be a destination for boat trips during the summer.
Another tourist attraction is the Truglia Tower, which stands on a stone rock on the extreme tip of the Sperlonga promontory.
Built on the foundations of a pre-existing Roman watchtower, it has been the victim of devastation several times. Currently, it is the Marine Environment Education Center of the Regional Natural Park Riviera d'Ulisse.
Furthermore, for art and archeology lovers you could visit the The Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga which represents one of the most fascinating testimonies for the knowledge of the myth of Ulysses in ancient art.
Have you ever been to Sperlonga?
