Is eating the best cutlet in Milan impossible? We give you 10 addresses where you can find the best typical dish of Lombardy (and also the most famous).
I have lived for a while to Milan and even if I don't like the city so much I try to find its positive sides that often reside in the kitchen. Because as a good Roman I can't do otherwise. Wandering around Milan and comparing myself with friends, I tried to draw up a ranking of 10 best Milanese cutlets in the city.
La cotoletta was born in Milan, even if the Austrians boast its paternity as a close relative of their Wiener Schnitzel. The perfect cut is called manico, or the cut with the bone, tastier and softer. So, in order not to run into self-styled cutulete, I will show you the 10 addresses to try in Milan that ban cherry tomatoes and rocket placed after cooking that cover the crunchiness and the elephant's uregia, very wide and very low version where the meat it is beaten until it is frayed. The Milanese cutlet, the real one, is another story.
1. The Cotoletteria
It starts with The Cotoletteria in Via Domenico Cirillo 12, here the classic cutlet is also served in different variations: from Padan, with gorgonzola and walnuts, to Valdostana served with porcini mushrooms and fontina, to Trevisana with radicchio from Treviso and smoked mozzarella.
2. From Martino
In one of the historic streets of Milan, there is From Martino in Via Farini 8, a small and familiar place, you should book. The staff is kind and nice, the only flaw is the bathroom located in the courtyard next to the door, but if we talk about Cotoletta here it is really good.
3. The Trattoria del Nuovo Macello
Between Viale Jenner and Via Lancetti, it awaits you The Trattoria del Nuovo Macello, via Cesare Lombroso 20, here for example the Milanese is presented in a high and juicy version, among other things with a rosy heart to fall in love with.
4. The Trattoria la Pesa
The Trattoria la Pesa, via Giovanni Fantoni 26, is located in the semi-periphery of Milan here the cutlet is fried in clarified butter. The result is a greater delicacy of flavor, respecting the authentic Milanese tradition. After all, people come to Trattoria la Pesa to taste a perfect anthology of Lombard cuisine.
5. Osteria alla Grande
Osteria alla Grande, via delle Forze Armate 405, an old-fashioned tavern, adorned with picturesque faces and names. On the table the rigorous tradition with cassoeula, braised meat, ossobuco ... then her, a buttery and very tender cutuleta. Perhaps one of the best known and most appreciated by the Milanese.
6. The Liberty
The Liberty, viale Monte Grappa 6, here too the cutlet is a rather impressive portion of high quality veal, pink, thick and crunchy.
7. El Barbapedana
Then we continue with El Barbapedana in Corso Colombo, 7 a small place with typical Milanese dishes and nice staff. Here the Milanese veal cutlet served with sautéed potatoes is offered.
8. The Trattoria Arlati
The Trattoria Arlati, via Alberto Nota 47, a place that is also a shelf of tinsel and furniture that give their contribution to the familiar, crepuscular atmosphere. The cutlet is a finger and a half high and crunchy but, as they say in these cases, magically soft inside.
9. Osteria Brunello
Osteria Brunello, Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi 117, the low version of the cutuleta is a pleasant exception, one of the few cases in which the elephant ear holds the spot, while remaining an unmentionable dish.
10. The other island
And finally The other island in via Edoardo Porro 8, where the chef Hu Shunfeng is Chinese, but you don't mind. His 30 euro round cutlet is perfectly Milanés in the method and unfortunately also in the price, not very low cost.
