A different day in Puglia exploring the beautiful caves of Castellana. Come and find out the prices and how to reach the caves.
Between the Land of Bari and Valle d'Itria the municipality of Castellana Grotte, famous for the important caves, located one kilometer and a half from the town.
These important caves were discovered in 1938 by the speleologist Franco Anelli, who was the first to notice the presence of the karst phenomenon, starting their exploration. These are caves that can be partially visited, but particularly extensive: it is in fact possible to create both a complete itinerary that winds for over 3 km, with a path that can be completed in about two hours, and a partial itinerary, about a kilometer long and covered in 50 minutes. The complete route includes the discovery of the fabulous White cave, illuminated with lights that allow you to appreciate its grandeur. Obviously the visits are guided and it is strongly recommended to use gymnastic shoes that allow you to complete the route without problems.
There are also many initiatives that are cyclically organized inside these splendid caves. How not to mention the now traditional representation of Dante's Inferno. The project is called "Hell in the Cave- dancing verses in the dark air ”And truly represents an extraordinary way to enjoy a unique show within an exclusive setting. It is in fact possible to combine the complete visit of the caves with the ticket for the Dante show for a total cost of just € 27,00.
The initiative organized by the guides of the Puglia Grotte Group, the so-called Speleonight, for groups of 15 people, which allows a night visit to the caves, when there are no other visitors, offering the possibility to walk through the caves as real explorers, equipped only with helmet, canister and autonomous lighting. The cost is 25 euros each but it is really worth it all!
In short, it is about living a real adventure surrounded by canyons, stalactites, stalagmites and ... bats! Yes, because as in all respected caves, there are them too! Quiet they are absolutely harmless and if you are lucky you can also see other cute animals that populate these caves.
I remind you that i children up to 5 years enter for free, while reductions are available for children aged 6 to 14: they pay € 8,00 or € 12,00 depending on whether you choose the complete or partial path. Adults instead pay € 10,00 or € 15,00 depending on the choice… but don't forget the spring promotion, valid on Sunday morning.
Finally, a small clarification on the temperature that you will find inside the caves: it ranges from 14 to 18 degrees, so cover up, it could be humid.
