La Dome of St. Peter is one of the symbols of the city of Rome. With over 133 meters in height, 41,50 meters in diameter and 537 steps starting from the base of the building to the lantern.
The Dome rests on a high drum and four immense pillars support the entire structure, whose weight is estimated in 14.000 tons. The dome was built in just two years by Giacomo Della Porta, following the designs of michelangelo. From a structural point of view it consists of two superimposed caps, according to what has already been done in Florence since Brunelleschi: the inner shell, thicker, is the load-bearing one, while the outer one, covered in lead plates and exposed to atmospheric agents, protects the former. Eight hundred men worked on the completion of the dome which, in 1593, was closed with the soaring lantern with paired columns.
Climbing the Dome of San Pietro is possible and it is an experience that I recommend you try also because there are two steps. First of all it is good to say that the 537 steps can be done on foot or by elevator. This first step allows you to have a first beautiful view of the city and to see San Pietro from the inside. A wonderful sight. The ascent is not free like the entrance to the Saint Peter Basilica but it costs € 5 if done on foot and € 7 if done by lift.
The second step instead leads directly to the highest point of the Dome. There are no elevators here and everything is on foot. Not recommended for elderly people or those who suffer from heart for the narrow passages and the spiral staircases that lead to a more than unique sight. You will feel like you have Rome at your feet.
