There are places in Umbria, outside the classic tourist circuits, which still many Umbrians do not even know. There are magical and evocative places, capable of surprising and striking you to such an extent that you have to go back a second time to look for a new perspective of interpretation.

One of these places is definitely there Scarzuola of Montegabbione (in the province of Terni and a few kilometers from Orvieto), included in the network of Great Italian Gardens.

La Scarzuola was born in 1218 as a Franciscan convent founded by the same San Francesco d'Assisi, but it was in 1956 that it found new life thanks to the purchase and restoration of the visionary Milanese architect Tomaso Buzzi who wanted to build his “Ideal City” conceived as a theatrical machine.

Inside, in fact, you can find 7 theaters that culminate in the central “acropolis”. All around gardens overlooked by futuristic buildings full of symbols, secrets, references and quotes that reveal multiple perspectives. Among the most used elements are the stairs, the labirinti, figures of monsters and elements related to astronomy.

The first impression one gets, entering the Scarzuola, is that of disorientation. In fact, you are immersed in a timeless place that does not have a unique explanation.

The visits, led by the eclectic nephew of Tomaso Buzzi, can be done all year round by reservation and for a minimum of 8 people. The cost of entry is € 11.
